Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

god i hope we are'nt going down the same road as vassilli. i do believe ankerson's tests give some general ideas about steel abilities. as mentioned cutting tire sidewalls, sneakers, aluminum cans & cardboard certainly do'nt give same general performance but all these tests are great because they certainly tell us something. as for trusiums remember that with the exception that 2 plus 2 equals 4 todays theruoms may be laughed at in 75 years.---dennis

Well, it's just one form of testing. We'll all eventually find that cutting 5/8" manila rope is a far cry from cutting say corn or drywall. As well, wear resistance is not the final word in edge retention.

Also using the best edge finish for the media and or use is also important and that can change based on uses.

Hey Jim forgive me if this has been asked already but I didn't see S110V listed on the first page of steels. Any idea where, say, Kershaw's S110V would fall on your edge retention list? I've read good stuff about it. Thanks in advance.

You are correct, it's not there. ;)

The reason is the aggressive recurves and or serrated edges, either is useless for testing.

If S110V is at 61 RC it will be better than all the other steels on the list in the rankings easy.

Would you happen to know what hardness Kershaw ran their S110V at in the Shallots? I just bought one and am kinda wondering what to expect from it. Thanks again.

Couldn't tell you, but whatever it is it will be better than anything else production wise.

S110V, 10V and S125V are in a different class.

Hey Jim, I was wondering if you plan on getting the spydie m390 mule and testing it??also do you know anything of this steel they are calling for on the new zt0777

Dlc, not sure on thickness. I have a preorder in with kershawguy so I'm confident in receiving one .ill let ya know

Just pulling this up for mention (below). It isn't surprising that for at least some cutting uses S30V and S35VN come up similarly, I think, because that's not where Crucible says the differences are. Jim, thanks again for doing all this work.
