Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

knarfeng I understand about giving the same level of initial sharpness, but your ranking does not match my usage experience, nor do I think it match the usage experience of the average poster here.

I understand that a polished blade may well cut better and longer than a non-polished blade. However, if it requires a polished edge to achieve your result, and most users don't use a polished edge, will your ranking reflect the experience of the general population? The average user, even on BF, does not use a 6000-grit finish. Will the average user in the field actually get the same edge retention with AUS8 as with VG10 or S30V? I tend to doubt that they will. I don't.

This is to test the "best steel" that is why you have to remove as many variables as possible. To give you a group to work from and see which you like best. Not everyone can get all their knives hardness tested either.

Hey Jim,
I was wondering if you plan on getting that new sprint manix with cts's s30. That way we can get some real testing done.

If you would like I have Spyderco Terzuola Starmate in 440V and a Benchmade 710 in M2HS steels also a Kershaw Avalanche in S60V I would need to track down. If you are interested. Also I forgot I have a Spyerco Military in BG42.

I have 2 more 440V blades here to test (440V is S60V), I don't deal with re curves anymore in the testing.

I would test the BG-42 Military though, no hurry though.

Great I did know s60v was 440v just thought maybe you wanted different brands, but if you already have two ok. So you mean the little curve in the 710 is to much?

I do have a Elishewitz Nimravus Cub in M2HS also what knife did you test ZDP-189 in sorry if already was asked.

I don't touch recurves anymore for testing at all.

The ZDP blade was a Spyderco Endura 4 FFG and it was hardness tested at 65 HRC.

Hi Ankerson,

Was that Spyderco Endura 4 FFG at 65 HRC new out of the box? Or did you have it custom heat-treated to 65 HRC?

Sincerely,

I have spent several hours reading this thread. I have enjoyed it all !!!! What a tremendous amount of work, Ankerson, you have put into doing this testing. About 35 years ago I tested every "new" steel I tried. My testing meathod was much the same but in straight knives. Since I was making the knives I tried to take the same care in the thickness and bevel angles, but tested at the highest recommended hardness for that steel. I condone the effort to eliminate variables like blade thickness , curves and length in order to provide a fair test gound. I believe many missed the point of the hardnesses being reported. This was not at all said to be the optimum hardness for use of a particular steel but one that if in the allowable range of variance allowed for a testing to be made if the knife sizes were also acceptable. Also all of the knifes were folders and all, well almost all (thanks MR. Wilson !!! ) were factory made knives.
Ankerson, I think you did a super job and I will certainly be back for more of your education. Frank

Noting this comparison in light of the recent shipment of the XHP Military and thinking about the CPM-D2 sprint of the same knife:

Category 4

CTS-XHP

Category 5

CPM - D2 (62)

Didn't have XHP RC tested in that knife, but the XHP Military will be RC tested and ranked here once I am done.

So it would be reasonable to expect an S30V Military to perform about the same as a CPM-D2 Military. Interesting...
