Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

I don't think that very many folks would be willing to loan out a knife for toughness testing.

Don't have any 440A around anymore, but I do have a Dozier D2 blade and a friction forged D2 blade I need to run here really soon after the plumbers get done at the house.

I will be excited to see how the friction forged D2 does. The claimed edge RC on these is pretty danged high. I worked in the Diamond industry (at a competitor to the company that does these blades), and am intrigued by friction forged steel.

I think it's supposed to be in 68 HRC range towards the edge so we will see.

What about CPM 3V steel? Are you going to test it it near future?

Haven't seen anything thin enough to test.
Hmm... The BRKT Bravo Necker in 3V from 1/8" stock, and I bet a custom maker like Dan Keffeler could/would be able to produce something, but, as you mentioned before, $$$.

That said, with the popularity of your tests on this forum, you could set up a re-sale service or receive donations. As mentioned already, it's not like you're taking the knives to catastrophic failure, so donations may come flowing in... of course then you need to find the time to test them, and you're at least too far from me to pay for that time in beer & steaks ;)

For those desiring limit-tests, I suggest you contact Cliff Stamp (he now has his own forum and can be found on YT). His work and internet publications are what brought me into the knife community. Knowledgeable guy.

Just my 2 cents, I think it would be very helpful to list the actual knive(s) used to test each steel. More information is always better, and there are other variables besides steel which could affect testing, even with every effort to standardize things.

For me, the surprises are that SG-2 and AUS-8 are in the same category, and that VG-1 came out 2 steps above VG-10. Makes me think there have got to be other factors at work here besides just the steel alloys.

Ankerson,
I may have missed it, but have you ever retested 5160 at a higher RC for smaller knives? 55 seems like a range for serious choppers.

The friction forged process creates a very hard edge, and much softer spine.

You should watch the video's of them blanking a blade. Spinning diamond bit, high pressure squishes and heats the blade at what will be the edge.

Now, if I could only have some input on the style of their knives.......................

There are a lot of knives I would think would be sweet in that steel, with that forging/heat treat. Kitchen knives, Nessmuck, etc!

Great thread, thanks for all the work you put in to give us an idea of edge retention on such a wide variety of steels. I was wondering though, and I haven't read all of the replies so I apologize if this is a repeat request, if you would be willing to post the manufacturer and possibly the model of knife used for each steel test? Some of them have it and it is a great reference, but I'm left wondering about the others.

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone can throw some advice my way. basically i need some new blades, i bought some recently off a guy who clearly was on commission for sales! ti have used them for a couple of months and they look like i have used them for years! i don't mind spending more money but i just need some guidance, the most reasonable place i have seen for diamond blades is those guys ftisupplies.co.uk, any other suggestions are very welcome

:) cheers

What precisely are you asking about? That site you posted only sells diamond saw blades. If that's what you're looking for, I think the Gadgets & Gear section would be more appropriate.

How should Acuto+ stack up?

Acuto+ as used by CRKT is 59-60 Rockwell C hardness with a composition of 0.90%-0.95% carbon, 17%-18% chromium, 0.50% manganese, 1.30%-1.50% molybdenum, 0.04% Phosphorus, 0.50% Silicon, and .10%-.25% Vanadium.
