I have to say that on this, I'm with Spectre (who looks to have somehow gained wisdom well beyond his years).
MauiRob says:
Knowing what the right thing to do is, and doing it under the most horrible of circumstances are often two different things.
Ain't that the truth! I have no idea whether I would do the right thing under the most horrible of circumstances and I have the sinking feeling that I would be all too likely to screw up, but at least some of the time I would like to feel that I have thought in advance about what the right thing would be. And here, I feel confident that I have thought about it and that I basically agree with Spectre that hate and torture would not be it.
The Osamas of the world, along with all their kind -- IRA, N. Ireland "loyalist", Hamas, Hezbollah, Nepali Maoists, Sendero Luminoso, and all the others -- need to be eliminated, by one means or another. Still, Spectre is absolutely right that "We gain nothing by becoming what we hate." Giving ourselves over to hate makes us haters. Torturing even terrorists makes us torturers. I don't want to see any of my brothers (oops, don't forget the sisters) from this forum having to carry that kind of bad baggage around with them.
Rob, you're right that we have a good deal of mutual respect among ourselves here. I don't disrespect any of you who sincerely feel that I am wrong in this. And I really can't claim that I would actually do the right thing and keep my cool while doing it. I hope I would and I hope you all would too. The coming times are perilous -- as much for our "souls" as for our physical bodies. I pray that we can all come through them with our spirits intact and healthy.
