I was just on ebay and saw the above knife, and was wondering have people here bought spyderco prototypes for their collections. I thought knives that were prototypes were always kept with the company.
anyways tc

Looks fake. The guy doesnt even know what type of metal the knife is made of. It almost looks like a nock off.

It wouldn't be the first time a development prototype escaped from a maker. I guess we can ask Sal if it is for real. The guy appears to be pretty proud of it, $142.50 and it hasn't hit reserve yet

sal glesser CEO of spyderco ,and from what i hear one of the best blokes you could ever hope to deal with

Yup. If you read through a few of the threads here, you'll likely see some of his posts. He is also a moderator here and at the Spyderco factory forum in his spare time. I guess he sleeps even less than I do :D

Hi AJ,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Most prototypes will have no markings on the blade or will be marked that it is a prototype.

As a general rule, Spyderco doesn't sell prototypes. a few have been given away, but most are saved for future display in the outlet store. I will admit that a few have been "lifted" over the years, by crew no longer with us.

Sirgalant, thanx for the kind words, but I too have my faults, :o

thanks Samhain, but somehow the link isn't working. but, because of your link i found it anyway: http://cgi.ebay.nl/RARE-1-OF-2-SPYD...ryZ63800QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

well Sal, is it real or not?

(i'm guessing it's for real though; usually proto's don't have too much info on the blade/handle, so the "what-steel-is-it"-thing could be explained.....)

It's real and was not stolen. It was a gift to our art director at the time.

Although there were more than two protos made of the model. There were only two that looked like that.
