Rat Chat down

Early next year maybe a good guess. I have a lot less problems on rat and in a yard than I do on blade. I am very happy that they have their own forums. I've never gotten a virus, worm or malicious attack from rat chat or at the yard I cannot say that from blade.

Man Vs Wild marathon today. there is going to be a deep, deep grove in this couch by Monday morning

I, for one, have never really been able to figure out why Swamp Rat (or Busse Combat) needs two chat rooms. Rather than spend a whole lot more time and money to fix Rat Chat, perhaps the time has come to retire it in favor of this subforum. After all, why not let somebody else deal with the headaches of hosting your forum, especially when you're already paying them to do that?

Just a thought. :)

.

I take it you've never spent much time over at the Swamp?
Then what you're missing is a very close and intimate Community,a Family of people who aren't just vaguely known names on the computer screen...
It's the difference between getting together at the end of the day at some busy pub,
and meeting your friends at Uncle Eric's place and having a kitchen party :)

The irony in this statement is palpable. The chances that one of the 3 things you mentioned took down the chat is very high, but blade forums is still here, running along.

Irony aside, 2+ weeks of downtime in ridiculous and probably speaks to another problem, such as a lack of adequate backup. Now i see why they have the store and the forum hosted on separate domains.

I'm not thrash talking the swamp, i know how difficult it can be to set up and maintain these systems, but 2 weeks + of downtime shouldn't happen. I hope someone catches some heat over not having a good enough disaster recovery plan.

There are ways to deal with this sort of thing, but larger sites get hit and don't recover as well, I just don't want to see that happen to the Swamp. Fault tolerance and backup are different things, hopefully they had both in place, but it doesn't sound like they planned for whatever happened.

A good disaster recovery plan can be the difference between being in business or not for an internet based company. Bladeforums has served as a nice fail-over for the Swamp forum, but it still leaves a large block of content/knowledge unavailable, and interrupts continuity within the community. Even assuming all the posts are restored, there will still be people who become less involved because of the extended downtime.

Knowing about Bladefroums is great, but there isn't even a place holder page telling people to come here. If i didn't already know, i'd have no clue what was going on. All you get when you click on the forum is a 404/page unavailable. That can't be good for business.

There is literally no mention of this site or of the outage on either Swamp Rat page that i have seen, that just blows my mind. This can't be good for the community or possible future customers. If you can't get the forum up, at least put a page in its place telling people it will be back soon, and to check here for info.

Just my 3 or 4 cents

+1 Brother Wolf. The Swamp IS different to BF. It is a good analogy that you used. We like to play at Uncie Eric's the most !

For Bussekin, there is a seperate forum at Scrapyard, Swamp Rat and a forum at Busse Combat which is hardly used.

Then there is the Busse forum here at BF and the Swamp Rat forum here at BF.
That makes 5 forums ! Jerry even says that Ganza notices could be at any of the 5 forums !

While Rats, Hogs and Dogs can unite here at BF - the Dogs need their Yard, the Rats need their Swamp and the Hogs have a lovely trough here they share with all ! ;)

Just my 22 cents worth.

Long live the Swamp and all who dwell there in ! :D

i got Nessmuk's "Woodcraft" book for Christmas and it's a surprisingly good read. i'm looking forward to trying out some of his camp recipes. "jack cakes" look interesting. anybody tried making these?

Actually, I used to spend a lot of time at the Swamp. In fact, Rat Chat was the first forum I hung out at. Then my interests changed for awhile. By the time I got back, the Swamp had slowed to a crawl. At that point, I started spending more time here. When I did go back and check out Rat Chat, it seemed that most of what was being discussed over there was being duplicated here. So I just stopped going over there. And since Rat Chat has been down, I haven't really noticed much difference. Seems as if most of the Rats are just as comfortable hanging out here as they are hanging out there.
