Well i ordered my RC3 a few days ago. I had already got the izula and i loved it so i decided to get the RAT i really wanted, the RC3. However when it came out of the box i was disappointed with the blades cutting edge. I have the black RC3 plain edge. It was not sharp at all. I tried cutting paper with it and it tore it instead of slicing through it. It struggled to cut steak and para cord. I didnt even try shaving my arm with it cause if it cant cut paper it probably wont shave my arm hair. It is pretty blunt. My friend has ordered RAT Cutlery knives before and he said this one is not right. He has 2 RC3's and they both came with really good edges. Is this the case with all your RAT 3's? Would be nice if you included a sharpener with the RC3 then. Little disappointed that i couldn't use the RC3 to its full potential. Not bashing you or anything RAT Cutlery, just letting you know how i received the knife.

EDIT: My friend came over to my house and brought his RATS and his sharpening rod things. He tried to sharpen my RAT knife but couldn't get a proper edge on it. He then showed me how he sharpened his and i was able to shave some hairs off my arm with his knife. Is it possible that i got a "dud" knife here by accident?

Most factory edges are there just to get you started anyhow. Just give it a light touch-up with a medium or fine stone and you should be golden. My RATs have all come scary sharp, but with knives from many other manufacturers I've had to give them a quick out-of-box edge freshening before they were at their best. :)

I would send an email to Jeff and let him know. I know Jeff will take care of it/ Have an pics of the edge of the knife?

Ya i agree but the knife should at least cut stuff. The blade is dull like it was hit on a rock 200 times then polished up to look nice

All of RAT's came shaving sharp from the start. Not sure what happened with yours. I am sure Jeff will chime in soon. Meanwhile, a RAT is easy to sharpen. Give it a touch up and you will be good to go.

I can't speak for him myself, but if it's really that bad I'm sure Jeff would be more than happy to have it resharpened for you. It's very odd that it would be THAT dull as I don't think that anyone to date has had a problem that bad with a RAT factory edge.

In the meantime--got any pics? I'd like to see that since it's kind of a first!

I am terrible at sharpening knives so i dont even try anymore. Will probably have to send the knife in to get professionally sharpened as i wanted to take it with me camping on Tuesday. Wife insists on going camping as its a "family tradition". Personally i would rather go in the summer time when im not freezing my A#@ off but whatever, gotta keep the wife happy

Isn't one of the big benefits of the Rat line is that they are easy to sharpen.. I am sure a light touch up followed by a good strop and you will be able to shave your face in morning.

Well the knife cuts if i put allot of pressure on it and kind of "saw" through whatever i am cutting. It is definitely NOT good at slicing anything and tears paper. i am out of batteries for my camera and my wife comes home late tonight from spending the day at work then going to her mothers house for dinner. She has the car..

some times hsit happens. i would be bummed it was not sharp out tha box but it's not a big deal grab a sharpener and do it up, after all if it came shave sharp what are you gonna do when the edge dulls.

also you say your not good at sharpening. save your money on a service and get something to sharpen with instead. rats are super easy to sharpen on just about anything abrasive. take your time and you'll get it just keep it about 20 deg. and use light pressure. if you still can't do it get a drag through style though the thought makes me cringe

If you have a hard time sharpening just use the permanent marker trick--paint the edge of the knife with permanent marker (colored ones are easiest to see) so you can see if you're matching the bevel correctly against the stone.

In order to find the 20-degree angle you should be sharpening at hold the knife perpendicular to the stone (90 degrees) then halve the angle (45 degrees) then again (22.5 degrees) and finally just back off a smidgen from there. Now just do an equal number of strokes each side. Hope that helps. :)

Mine are very sharp! Are you sure you're using the right side of the blade?

LMAO ya man....And its pretty dam dull. I would probably rather hit you with it than try and cut you if you attacked me.

Well whatever. I guess ill just deal with it. Just letting you know what i received and sharing my feelings on the RC3 with you.

Why would you just deal with it....when you can email Jeff and he will take care of it.

My humble opinion but anyone who spends the time and money on quality cutting tools should have the equipment/knowledge on how to maintain them - sharpening being the most important.

You will never get better unless you try, and there are a lot of kits out there that take the guessing game out of the equation. Spend $40 on a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and never look back.
