RAT Fire Kit

very nice!

why not make a version with only a ferro rod?
(seeing that you already have the capsule for tinder storage, thus no longer needing magnesium)

I agree with "Qrt", why not just one with a Ferro rod ?

Read this thread, especially post # 49. Looks like someone may have had this idea before us, or at least about the same time. My original concept drawing is dated August 12 so I'm sure nick-nak probably thought of the idea before us since he posted a prototype up in late August before we had our prototype built. I just emailed him asking if he had a problem with us producing a design that we both thought of around the same time period. The one thing we are real touchy about is Intellectual Property Rights. So, I'll wait until we hear from him before going forward.

I would take one also, very nice design. I would also like one that was a ferro rod only, maybe make two versions? I would get one (or more depending on $$) of each if you had both versions made up.

Very awesome btw!

Looks like a great addition to my pack...

Dry tinder, mag, ferro, all in one, on your keychain? The motto for this should be, "If you can't start a fire with the RAT fire kit, you don't deserve the fire."

:-)

Ok noob question here: can someone please explain the benefit of a solid ferro rod instead of one with a mag stick?

I'm guessing that you just don't need the additional fire starter (magnesium shavings) when you can carry or produce your own tinder(?)

I'm just asking because I often use the typical cheap-o military/Coghlans/Wal-Mart mag+ferro piece and have found having the magnesium shavings very useful at times during the wet season down here (not trying to start a fire in the rain or anything, just hard to find good dry tinder sometimes depending on where I am and what I bring with me).

Am I missing something?

A solid Ferro-rod would have a MUCH longer life than a thinner combo rod. Also, with the top, handle-part having a sealed storage spot(if I understand the design correctly), one could just as easily shave some magnesium off a seperate bar, and store it in the cap along with some charcloth, of whatever your preferred firestarting medium happens to be.

If the finalized version has a solid Ferro-rod, it's definately on my list. Then again, I have a LOT of things in my list thanks to this accursed forum... :p

Ok that's pretty much what I thought..thanks!

And, yeah, I'd probably be ordering a couple myself if they ever make it to retail..

I agree more ferro rod less mag you should marry up with redi-edge and make a combo sharpener/ferro rod with waterproof container for tinder.
(I.E.wd-40 soaked cotton balls)all in all a great idea I'll take 3 plz
