RAT Firestarter

I impulse-bought this, should be here next week. I am such a sucker for stuff like that. :o
 
You won't be disappointed with it, it's like a mini-volcano with a storage compartment and provision for 20mm compass mounting in cap. 8-)

I was drooling over one on the RAT web site yesterday. While surfing on the subject, I came across one mention where a 15yo made one with a spy capsule and a generic ferrocerrium rod, drilling a hole in the bottom of the capsule and epoxying the rod in place.

I made some last year by just epoxying a rod to the outside of the spy capsule, making for less length and giving a lot more surface area for the glue. It gives full access to the length of the firesteel too. I made another doing the same with a plastic match safe, giving enough room to stash a lot of tinder and a hacksaw blade scraper inside. I made one other with a capsule compass glued to the cap of the match safe. I used JB Weld for the epoxy.

This is really a good idea. I found another version on line...the ferro rod is longer and has LOT more magnesium in it (spark throw and burn times are amazing!). Anyways, the nice feature is the small integral capsule. I can get a full one and half of a cottonball w/ Vaseline in the ones I have. Add these to the firesteel loop and you're all set for when you can't find dry tinder or just need to get the fire going in an emergency. Do note that some sheaths with the fireloop too close to the sheath won't fit very well...my Rainwalker sheath works perfectly!

I will say that I like the capsule design of the RAT version much better.

Rock,

With the quality of gear you have, you would love the RAT Fire Kit. Striking the Misch Metal Rod, I'm six feet tall and was striking it at solar plexus level and the "sparks" thrown were burning all the way to the blacktop.
 
ROCK, the RAT one is much bigger. It will hold a LOAD of PJ balls. Its about the size of a film container, silghtly smaller.

Don't tempt me guys:D It sounds like RAT really hit another homerun! I'm not sure who makes these ferro rods as it sounds similar to mine, but I can literally throw sparks close to 10 feet away and they still hit the ground bouncing around burning:eek: This isn't a ferrocerium rod, it's an incendiary device:D
