RAT Firestarter

This is really a good idea. I found another version on line...the ferro rod is longer and has LOT more magnesium in it (spark throw and burn times are amazing!). Anyways, the nice feature is the small integral capsule. I can get a full one and half of a cottonball w/ Vaseline in the ones I have. Add these to the firesteel loop and you're all set for when you can't find dry tinder or just need to get the fire going in an emergency. Do note that some sheaths with the fireloop too close to the sheath won't fit very well...my Rainwalker sheath works perfectly!

Those are from me. I actually made the first one as kind of a joke, but got so much interest in it, that I started offering them in the store. I know the capsule isn't the optimal shape for holding it long periods. I had the capsule made that way so it could tail stand, but hopefully it still works well for you. The Firecap has a much longer firesteel compared to the RAT, but it looks like their capsule is a bit larger. I am actually working with the manufacturer that made the aluminum stuff on my site on some other designs, so hopefully I'll have some new versions out soon. I have some other new toys in the works that I think you guys will be very interested in as well. :)

I think these look great. I drool over your site constantly, just want to wait until after the holidays to free up some money. Are you going to off the knives again?

I don't want to clutter up the thread with too much off topic stuff, so I'll send you some info via PM.

How do those "misch metal" rods compare with the standard light my fire ferro rods?

They say that it makes larger, longer burning sparks compared to just a shower of sparks, but I find that if you strike the LMF rods with some pressure that it makes pretty big sparks that will burn for whole second or two once it hits the ground. Are they really much different?

Hey storl, it's a great concept...I did think the rod was a little long, but man, does it throw sparks! I picked up two and my son loves it; it's the only fire steel (other than the Blast Match) that he can reliably strike...he just needs more practice, but it's a big confidence booster for him. I do have to ask about your ferro composition. It really must have a lot of magnesium in it because every shower of sparks burn for a long time...a real good feature in my opinion. Looking forward to more ideas from you, keep it up:thumbup:

The difference is misch metal rods produce molten balls of white-hot fire when struck with the striker. SO FRIGGIN COOL :D

How is that different though? I think I get what theyre saying about ferro rods making showers of sparks, I've had a cheap one that seemed harder than the LMF brand, and it basically just made showers, but with the LMF I can scrape off some pretty damn big sparks that burn quite long (for a spark), and what is a spark if not a molten ball of white hot metal?

I'd really like to see pics or a video of it in action, a picture tells a thousand words.
