RAT Pack final vote

I've found quite a few lost or disgarded knives out and about in the woods over the years, everyone of them had wood handles.

I've also lost a few, most likely would have had a much easier time recovering them had they had brightly colored handles.;)

Granted, woodsman of old got by without orange handled knives. They also got by with flint blades, black powder rifles and shoes without soles.

I bet when those pesky repeating rifles came out there were some old fashioned hunters talking about how they would never accept those new fangled, flashy, complicated contraptions.:D

Carry what you like.

I like what I carry. I've some flint, I've some steel. I've some blackpowder. I've some modern stuff too.
I don't lose what I like. Maybe I'm different that way.
Airplanes, APC's, tanks, boats, canoes, bicycles, boots, never lost a knife.
Don't see it starting anytime soon.
I've given away more than a few!
But if I ever do lose one, there's always a backup.:)

We realized at the onset of this little project that not everyone was going to be pleased with the end result. Everyone has their favorites and quite a few have things that they really don't care for at all.
I understand completely. This knife is not for me, it's for everybody. And the vast majority wanted orange G10. Who am I to dispute that?:)

I felt this way for a while. Aesthetically I like wood knives better. They are warmer to the touch and have beautiful grain. They look fantastic on the right cutlery. They can make a knife a piece of art.

But I have a few orange G10. In practical situations I have found I keep choosing them. In my non-orange knives, I end up augmenting them with a piece of really loud paracord. Its just that little practicality.....I'm one of those guys who doesn't have the 'keep it in your sheath' drill down to well. I'm eating my food and the knife is sitting there in the grass. I'm looking at some weird bug or taking a picture of some plant and there is my blade stuck in a damn tree. Sometimes I just get distracted...Where the hell did I put that thingy.....

Now in all seriously - which of these blades is easier to see???

kgd,
I hear what you're saying. In fact, I have lots of spare orange paracord fobs and lanyards floating around because my 3 year old daughter is constantly requesting that I make her stuff (little keychain loops, braids, bracelets, etc) out of the orange paracord, then gets bored with it. So I just rebraid it and attach it to all sorts of stuff. I agree, it does make it easier to keep an eye on things out in the woods. And I suppose an orange G10 handle would do the same. Meh. I just can't get too excited over it, is all.

For me this piece will not be seeing hard duty (unlike my present RC-3) and as such the added visual flair is a nice touch. :)

My current model is...in less than pristine visual condition. Everything checks out under the hood though! :D

Yeah somehow I doubt I'll be able to bring myself to use mine either. I'll either use my RC-4 or get a user RC-3 and keep the Rat Pack one as a collector.

Mrs Shotgunner - I'm rather shocked  I was simply trying to demonstrate the benefits that a forward lanyard can make. One that happens to be red also makes my RC-3 stand out....Notice how visible it is on the tree :)

This is what I wanted when they came out with the orange G10 handles...but then TONY GOT HIS WAY:D...and they went with OD/Orange...which I ended up buying and liking a lot. But am am pumped about a black and orange knife.

I better start saving my pennies so I am ready when these come out.

I know, I know, I know. We knew the rules from the beginning, and you guys did a good job herding all the cats and getting a decision finalized. For my part, the winner just doesn't appeal to me. I'll probably trade it for a 5 or a 3Mil and a IZULA or something. I think the larger crowd will be very happy. It is quite striking after all.

Just save your cash and buy the RAT you want .. No one has to purchase there RP # Knife...

It's specified on the RAT Pack knife thread that they will be doing all numbers of RAT Pack but that if you don't want it they will just put it for sale on the forum to people who wants one but that arenot part of the pack

there is no contract, if you don't like it just don't get it, easy!

Buy the RP# knife and another RC-3 and swap the scales, then sell the one with the orange. I'm lookin forward to getting mine. It'll look good with my Fiskars hatchet.

It will depend greatly on what gets marked (blade or scales) and how it is marked.
Might not be worthwhile (or wise) to trade scales.

I'm still debating whether or not to buy, and not just for sentimental reasons. A special edition RAT knife will have value regardless of the appearance, and Jeff's crew are going above and beyond for us. Hey, I may end up loving the knife when I have it in my hand, too. A lot of good people around here are pretty excited about the halloween colors, and I've been wrong before.

i didn't know forward lanyard's came in B cups!:p

I was thinking about doing this, but I read on an earlier thread that this is not recommended for some reason. I think it was something to do with the scales being somehow "fitted" to a particular knife, and swapping them out might result in a less-than-ideal fit. Anyone have any information on this? I'll try to find the post, but with so many RAT threads around here lately, it's going to be hard.

are you gonna use the knife? i mean if it's gonna sit in your "collection" and you're not going to carry it does the color REALLY matter?

Was this query directed at me? It doesn't matter, I'm going to answer it anyway:p. Yes, I'm going to use my forum knife. And use the hell out of it. I have no safe queens in my collection. I don't have enough knives to put any of them away. If it's just too purdy to use, I'll sell it. If it's not getting any dirt-time for whatever reason, I'll sell it. If it looks at me funny, I'll sell it:eek: I have only a few knives that are never to be put up for sale, all others are fodder.

yeah it was for you........i guess for me it's different. i don't like to mess my od/orange rc3 so for the hard work i use the mr's....lol and this one will just be a collector for me......but probably only b/c i have the option to "borrow" the mr's. so glad he loves me more then his RATS!

+1!

All mine are users as well. And they get used appropriately.:D

IMO, the blade is the most important feature of a knife as a tool.
What if the buyer had the option of choosing whatever scales they wished for?
If, and only if, the blade itself is where the unique features (logo, numbering, etc...) end up being placed.
Almost like a normal RC knife order process.
Nothing outside regular production available materials. Just an option for any of the three scales currently offered.

But, I can understand making all Rat Pack blades (at least this first version - hoping for more in the future!) the same for collectability.
