Hi folks well it's been awhile since I posted any pics so I thought I would do a thumb nail WIP on a little knife I have been working on. I needed to come up with a one day forged knife program, well actually, I had to do a small class in 3 hours for for our Blacksmith group and this is what I came up with. So, now I will show you how I make the Shop Rat Knife and I can make the knife, start to finish in 2 hours. its a fun little knife make & I would like to know if this is a knife you would buy. its a working knife and a little hip bling as well. I designed this knife to teach folks how to forge blades and to keep the fun in knife making and I would love to see any of you make a shop rat based on my WIP. In fact, I will give a D Lisch Shop Rat Knife to the first person to post their shop rat knife on this thread with a sphincter intact.

A little fine tuning on the blade
rat21.jpgrat22.jpgrat23.jpg with this tool I will start to upset the finger rest rat24.jpgrat25.jpg

after this tool gets it going I will use the round end of this hammer to finish it off
rat26.jpgrat27.jpgrat28.jpgrat29.jpg and a bit more fin tuning rat30.jpg

Get it all in line and clean the edge and it is ready to harden so I dial back the forge to around 1550 as I bring it up to heat if it looks like the tip is getting to hot I pull it out and rest it on the cold anvil

It got nice and hard
Time to clean it up you can see I ground smooth the jaws of this vice grip so I do not scratch up my Rat
rat39.jpgrat41.jpgrat42.jpg I hope you enjoyed my little WIP I will go get a pic of the rat pac.

Dave, very cool knife and WIP! What kind of laser pyro meter is that? Been looking for one!

The rat pac. Steve I got it at Grainger not sure of the brand but it reads up to 1800 thats works well for me. Now that I am done playing with the shop rats maybe I can get back to the knives I am working on for blade I think I just needed to take a brake and play for a day.

Hey Dave. Love those. I made about a hundred of these back in my ren-faire and SCA days. Wish I had better photos. However, I know this doesn't count because they didn't have sphincters. I am inspired to make a few more now. Thanks... as if I didn't already have a ton to do...

Very cool thread and project Dave. That's inspiring... might have to try something like that myself. Forgive my ignorance but how did you heat treat it?

Stuart see # & 7 of this Thread I used the forge and my heat temp gun I tempered in my oven but when I did the class in 3 hours we tempered with the forge too. its a quick and dirty knife I plan on making a sheath for one and putting it to the real test everyday shop use I will show it on my hip when its done

I saw that Dave but I just didn't understand it. I've seen a video of a guy quenching a blade then placing the spine on a red hot piece of steel to temper it but like I said, I didn't understand the "cold anvil" approach, hence my comment about my ignorance. :)

Stuart The cold anvil was to keep the tip from getting to hot when you put the knife in the forge the tip gets hot first if it gets to hot you over shoot the temp so I cool just the tip a few times so the thicker part of the blade has a chance to heat up and the whole edge is at the right temp without tip being too hot

Dave. . .thanks for posting the pic's up. . .I know you say it's a "quick & dirty" knife, but I think it's pretty attractive, sphincter and all!!!

I had a blast this weekend at the intro class and can't wait for you to offer this class as well. . .hoping I will be one of the first to attend!!!

Thanks again, Joel.
