Rat Trap - worth it?

hey guys,

I've got a line on a mint Rat Trap. It ain't the cheapest folder in the world, so I just wanted to check with the experts here if its worth the dough.

I really like the blade profile and the handle design, I just wondered if the overall quality is up to scratch.

I could, for example, get a Spyderco Military for a lot less, but I guess I could get one anytime....

Thanks

Mark

It's a great knife. I have one and want another. It's a big one though, so if you want a small knife to pocket carry you may want to go another route. The think the RT is that if you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it easy on the exchange. It won't last long at all.

The Military is a great knife as well. They are comparable, but I prefet the more drop-point blade profile of the RT. I say pick it up.

If you don't like it I'm first in line to buy it.

After I got my RT, I didn't throw away all my other folders, but I might as well have for all the use they are getting now.

Avert your eyes from those offensive blades and just get a glance at the Spydie Military and the Rat trap (both S30V) side by side.

I like them both but that Rat Trap gets scary sharp with hardly any effort. I haven't had the Spyderco long enough to have sharpened it yet. Both 'tip down' carry. Boooo.

Thanks for the sexy pics, fellas....

Yeah, tip down is the only negative but otherwise I really love the ergos. The size doesn't bother me at all. The bigger, the better!

Hopefully I can reel it in....

Yes. The materials and construction are the equal of Spyderco and Blade Tech. My guess is it was made by Blade Tech. I like to carry sets, so when I use a Busse or SR sheath knife it's the automatic choice. With the Ratchet I'm ready to go and not guilty of carrying a mix of brands:D. Just one of my quirks.

It looks big but is light, thin and easy to carry. The open back is also one of my preferences for a pocket hunter. :) Regards, ss.

What makes you think that the RT was made by BladeTech? I don't know for sure and I'm sure some the elder Rats will chime in, but I highly doubt that SRKW would lay its reputation on the line by letting another co. make the folder.

I've been wrong before though. Someone clear this up for us!

I like and carry my Rat Trap often. I didn't order one under the original run because I felt it would be larger than I care for in an EDC. After I got to handle one, my perception changed.

It is a very slim profile, light weight, and a comfortable carry. I found some of the comparably sized blades, like the Manix and Skirmish to be too heavy for me. I still own and like a ZT0300 but the Rat Trap is more in the size/weight/ease of carry league as my large classic Sebbie.

Bear in mind, this is a quality folder but *not* a folding prybar. It is a slicer, thru-and-thru!

Best of luck!

That's a good point Paddler. S30V is not a steel that you can apply a lot of lateral pressure to especially near the point. For slicin' only.

I can't stand them myself!!!!;)

Still looking for one more!!!

Go to the Blade Tech site and look at the Pro Hunters. Same clip, same scales, same fasteners in the same places. The Rat Trap is either made by Blade Tech or the same company made knives for Swamp Rat and Blade Tech, IMO.

I love my Rat Trap, by the way. I find myself carrying it more than all my other folders combined. Living in Alabama where people don't freak out over a 3.9" blade is a big plus, though.

There was a thread over on Rat Chat back in June '07 in which Martin had some comparison pics of the Trap and Blade Tech's Pro Hunter. The similarities are amazing. I just checked the thread and the pics are gone, but I have them saved if anyone would like to see them.

Oh, and I think the Rat Trap is the best folder for the money I've ever seen, and definitely the best I've ever owned. I've been EDCing mine for almost 3 years now and still like it as much as when it was new. Excellent knife.
