Rat Trap - worth it?

I believe that they had some small parts made by blade tech, but IIRC there was a thread on rat chat where this was discussed a while back. Where is Bully when you need him?

BTW, my Spyderco military has most of the same features and they look identical . . . Texture pattern, Hardware, spacers. . .

What makes you think that the RT was made by BladeTech? I don't know for sure and I'm sure some the elder Rats will chime in, but I highly doubt that SRKW would lay its reputation on the line by letting another co. make the folder.

I've been wrong before though. Someone clear this up for us!

Never seen any official comment on this but the hunter and the rat trap look almost identical to the exact positions of the screws. Blade-Tech makes great folder, why not use them.

hey guys,

I've got a line on a mint Rat Trap. It ain't the cheapest folder in the world, so I just wanted to check with the experts here if its worth the dough.

I really like the blade profile and the handle design, I just wondered if the overall quality is up to scratch.

I could, for example, get a Spyderco Military for a lot less, but I guess I could get one anytime....

Thanks

Mark

BH,

as an EDC the RT is more comfortable than the Mili, they have the same blade length but the handle of the Mili is longer. When it comes to ease of use then you notice that Spyderco has been making folders for a long time. The opening, closing, the liner lock, all of it works like a dream.

I have both and I tend to carry the RT because it is smaller, thinner and has a great blade design.

Will not buy a Busse folder till its tip up carry. A true design flaw as I see it no matter what the reasoning.

Good Lord that knife you're all talking about went for $266 on the Bay! It's a great knife and I bought three of the originals and if I remember right they were about $150 issue price.

Yup, that's the one. Too rich for my blood.

Sure wish they'd re-issue it - I think its a great design.

I agree - tip up is way better. The Millie is also flawed in this way. Reason I usually carry an Emerson or Chinook.

I have my receipt from the Fall 2007 Knob Creek (where the remaining stock was sold); they went for $138.95 (+ 6% KY sales tax). If you had to pay shipping, it would be a bit over $150. The "Swamp Rat Heritage" Sticky thread is a good place to find release prices. I don't have one of the earlier releases, but I've read that their pocket clips are stamped "Swamp Rat", clips on the ones at Knob Creek were not stamped.

I have some comparation pics of Rat Trap and Pro Hunter(s) too

thanks for the pic's " patsknives"

I agree 100%

The Rat Trap is worth every penny I paid for it. $138.95 if I remenber correctly. It is the the numbered version. I wouldn't sell it for three times the original price. I think they should bring it back!

One little feature that may go unnoticed is the tang where it meets the stop pin. Some of my knives are radiused there or just barely contact at the pin center. Under heavy pressure there is potential for the tang to be forced past the pin. The RT is machined to fit the pin and has an extension that extends over the top- a very nice functional feature. ss.

BTW- If the blade tech has this it may be a clue?

Tain't difficult to tap some holes for tip up clip mounting. STR can do it for you for about $20 if that's your only obstacle.

If it can be tapped then I may consider it as it is the only problem with this blade for me. How would one go about getting that done? I see the bladetech knives are double tapped. Alas if it only had the wave feature it would be the perfect folder, I'd never buy another.

I think the original poster answered his own question. The Spyderco Military is every bit as much knife for less momey. Don't succumb to the hype and get the better deal.
