Rat Trap - worth it?

The RT can absolutely be tapped for tip-up. Go to the exchange and type in Rat Trap. Look for KnifeAddictAlaska's user for sale ad. It's sold, but it was converted to tip-up and the right hand scale has a cool thumb groove ground into which makes the opening hole easier to access. I have never handled this blade, but KAAK knows his stuff. I forget who he said did the mods, but it was not him. My only concern is that the SS liners don't go all the way to the end of the handle. I'm not sure what the most effective way to tap this would be. I would never have the clip just tapped into the G-10. I've heard of stories where this was done by the factory by other manufacturers and they strip out VERY easy.

That said, once I have enough time to let my RT go I think it will go to STR for a tip-up conversion. He put one of his Fat-Boy titanium clips on my Spyderco Lil' Temp and the work is perfect. I would recommend him to any of you guys looking to have knife mods done. He's a true craftsman.

Difference also is that the Millie (not the CF-BG42 one) only uses one nested steel liner, where the RT and the BT Hunter use two.

I took the comparison pics that were shown here. I can make the same pics with also the Para-Millie and the Starmate, where I see a lot of similarities.
They are all great knives, the very best in their class, but the BT Wegner Hunter is my favourite EDC. One of the best designs for a folding pocket knife ever imho...

I think the original poster answered his own question. The Spyderco Military is every bit as much knife for less momey. Don't succumb to the hype and get the better deal.

Yes, do tell. What "hype" surrounds this otherwise normal little knife? And why your disrespecting the product here. If you dont like it, dont buy it. :grumpy:

I think there's a Spyderco sub-forum around here somewhere. Don't succumb to the hype around this place.

Its not even close in design to the RT. You are on crack.

So I guess youd have to tap the liners as well as the scales then:confused:. SW could have done us all a favor and tapped both ends like bladetech;).

I think the RT has a more robust blade on it. The Military (while a fine knife in its own right) has a much finer point. I carried one for quite some time but was always concerned about breaking the tip.....yes I tend to "use 'em hard".

The RT is the ONLY knife I own duplicates of BTW.

There is quite a bit of speculation as to the origin of the RT.....Seems to me that it is made of common materials: S30V, G-10, rolled stainless (liners) and it has one of the most common locking mechanisms on the market (the clip was, at one time, a totally generic part seen on most folders....I have on on my CQC-7 for cryin' out loud). Given those elements, there are bound to be some similarities don't ya think?
