Practice, Practice, Practice.
I try to use different types of tinder with my fire steel to see how they will work.
Dryer lint works best, but you won't have dryer lint in the field and if you did you will run out.
When people continue to practice what they have learned and learn to adapt, they will do okay. I think this course would be THE ULTIMATE beginning course to form a solid core. You will learn how to do it the right off the bat from experts so you can continue to learn on your own and adapt once you get back and continue to practice.
