Lets have a little fun...........:)

Were would you rate your self as a knife expert?

Scale of one - ten, --- ten being a master. And one you cut your self just looking at a knife?

I'll even add an anonymous poll - no one can see your vote.

So how many experts are there here?........ :D
And if you want to add a note about your self or this topic? That would be great.

I'll go first -- I'm going to say right now I'm a 6 on the scale.

I've had a few jobs were all I did was cut all day.
I can throw knives pretty good.
Know most of the knife steels. And can put a pretty good edge on a blade.
And know a lot about knives - custom - and factory.
And I keep up with knife laws - makers doing what? And trends of today and yesterday.
Have modest custom collection.
And I learn something every day about knives.

I'm by far no Bernard L. but I would like to get to be about an 8 on the scale I would be happy.

Regarding anything KAI related, maybe a 5. There's just so much information that I still have to learn.

Probably 5/6. I'm not too big into the custom market nor am I an expert in metallurgy. But I consider myself to be very hands on and have a good understanding of knife mechanics. I have owned more production folding knives than I can count, and most of the time I can confidentially recommend a knife to someone with pretty specific requirements.

I'm going to say I'm probably a 3, maybe a 4.

In my experience outside of knives, the best experts are the ones who will admit they can't possibly know everything.

I voted #9, "Almost there - now we're cooking."

Throughout my whole knife collecting experience I have managed to own over 300 knives. I have owned at least one knife from literally every production knife company in existence. (Yes, even the super low key ones no one really knows about.)

I don't consider myself a master knife knut yet. There are still a few things I have yet to learn. However I feel that I'm pretty damn close. :)

There is one man I have talked to who I know for a fact is probably one of the most experienced knife knuts in the world. His name is Dan and he is the owner of the very well known and respected Plaza Cutlery. (Probably the best knife shop in existence.) If you ever talk to that dude, you will be blown away by his knowledge on knives. He is a very well respected individual in the knife world and is friends with countless custom knife makers and knife company owners.

To build on that I also find another telling sign to be when you ask a question to them expecting a yes or no answer and instead they say "well...it depends!"

On bladeforum's and how that poll is written I am a 6, I am getting better at knives. Still don't know a lot, but getting better and trying to learn.

Outside of this forum, I am probably seen as a 9 or 10 by the public viewpoint.

Ditto ;)

I have found which knives suit me (and know not to impulse buy anymore), but I would love to know more about the forging process & metallurgy..

When I came to this forum I thought I knew about knives. Boy was it a shock to find out how little I really knew! Since then I have learned so much and am beginning to consider myself 'reasonably well informed' when it comes to knives but by no means am I an expert or anywhere close. There is still more to learn about metallurgy than I will ever be able to absorb. I just consider myself lucky to bask in the glow of the masters :D

I'm local to that shop, kinda, and I've always wanted to go there. I'll have to go check it out now and have a word with Dan!

Great post Bob.
That's what's this is all about - it' just for fun - no trophies will be given out here...:D

But on a note to your post -
They just rated the United States - states again in ranking?
And they go through and look at EVERYTHING? Cost of living? Jobs? Disasters? Quality of Life? etc.. etc... Than they add all this up? And give out a rating?
Mississippi moved up 4 this year? To like 41st place of 50 I think?
The disaster part hurts us a lot.

North Dakota is #1 I think?

Do you know the bottom state? #50 Last on the list???

Hawaii - yep - They have great quality of Life - But cost of living and space kills them....:)

So back on the knife expert thing - to master everything about knives seems it would be a LOT!:D
Do you know the proper way to hold a kitchen knife when dicing vegetables?
Great replies everyone.

I only live like a 7 minute drive down the freeway from Plaza Cutlery. I recommend any knife knut in Southern California to visit the shop. I promise you, will not be disappointed.

It's actually a pretty small store but the inventory compensates for its size. Their display cases are overfilled with hundreds and hundreds of knives from low end productions to high end customs and several high end flashlights too. All the walls in the store are also covered with hanging knives, swords, and tomahawks. Literally every inch of the store is covered with cool stuff and fine cutlery.

Dan, is also a rocking dude to talk with. He'll spend a long time with you just chatting about knives. He was even courteous and trusting enough to let me handle some of his personal edc knives straight from his pocket! Even if you don't have money to buy anything I still recommend visiting them to have a cool conversation. The whole staff always likes to have a good knife related chat.

And no I don't work for them. :D I am just a very satisfied customer/lurker of the shop.

And then there are those of us who really can't possibly know everything. Not enough space in the ole brain pan. That would be me. Now, if I could just figure how to get old song lyrics out and make room for more good stuff... :D

Hey I cut something.

I hope it grows back.....

Lol! Good laugh out of that one.

Exactly where I think I am as well. Well said.
