I gave myself a Pretty Good With Knives.

I can cut just about anything with them.
I do not cut myself, or others with them.
I can open and close the hardest Tri Ad locked folders one handed with ease.
I can sharpen just about any properly heat treated knife to a razor edge.
I keep them all clean and rust free.
I can talk knife steels with others, and completely baffle them. ;-)

No expert, though a lot of people who know me think I am.

Interesting. :-)

In all honesty, I'd rate myself at around 7 -- far from the best, far from the worst, but very well-practiced and skilled. :-)

Practiced/studied/used/played with/collected/trained with knives since I was more or less able to walk (in thanks to my grandfather)

Trained in self-defense since age 13 (Learned early on to respect even a fake knife, often times in the form of a PERMANENT marker...ugh)
Practiced knife throwing as long
Practiced survival training (knife-intensive, as long)
Most of my accidents have been knife-related...ugh
Have managed to use a knife to craft, build, destroy many things...;-)
Have battoned my brains out
Can use a knife, skillfully, for ordinary to off-the-wall things..;-) (Grabbler!)
Have crafted knives through both forging AND stock-removal..they were ugly as hell..and I ended with cuts
Known as the resident "knife/multitool" expert in my community
Have butchered more meat than I can keep track of

I gave my self a 4, even though I'm one of the younger ones here. I think I know a lot about knives. But there's still a lot more to learn :)

Everything's relative.

Compared to people on this forum, I'm a one or a two.

Compared to people I hang out with, I'm a ten. :D

Ive been a sushi chef for almost a decade.

I can sharpen on wet stones.

so id say im half way there?

I would rate myself as a 4 > 6 overall. Not so knowledgeable about custom knives, especially folders. I have my favorites and I generally stick to them with diversions here and there. I wish I knew more about the different steels; my knowledge is a practical using knowledge. There are so many knife manufacturers these days that its hard to know much about all of them. For example, Blind Horse Knives and Scrap Yard knives seem to be becoming more popular, but I know little about them. I will generally buy another "brand" to try out when I have the funds and willing let go of it. I consider buying a knife, any knife, pretty much a money flush. But that's the way hobbies are.

I know little about Canal Street Cutlery products and don't want to know much more about Bear & Sons.

Since I've always known that I alone am the Master of my fate, then it should follow as well with knives......and guns, and haute cuisine, beer, wine, etc

I've had some sharpening victories in the past couple of months but I've also folded a bevel. I know what a shoulder is, I didn't know in the past. I've learned a lot, I've improved some of my techniques, but after reading some of the commentary by long established makers and backcountry enthusiasts I know I have a lot to learn.

Knife expert..... funny. I was sharpening a Condor Kephart by hand (bench stones) and just couldn't get the angles more or less equal on the cutting edge. Slipped it through the Chef's Choice electric sharpener a few times and evened that sucker right up. Wouldn't do that to an expensive blade, but I would probably still be trying to sharpen it right.... :D

7 - MASTERS now -

Great replies - Thank you all for joining in, it's been a fun thread.

I started this thread as to your own view of your self EXPERTISE on knives over all -
Every category and aspect of knives would need to be included - Right?

Steels & materials
Designs
History
Custom Knives
Using
Throwing
Production Knives
Makers
Techniques & procedures.
Quality
etc.
etc.
etc.

I think you would have to have a committee and judges & rules - to know for sure? right?

And I'm sure the members who voted Master - do know their stuff.....:cool:

Any more Masters?

or wanna be knife experts?:)

On bladeforum's and how that poll is written I am a 6, I am getting better at knives. Still don't know a lot, but getting better and trying to learn.

Outside of this forum, I am probably seen as a 9 or 10 by the public viewpoint.

I'd say I'm right here as well. I only know one other knife Knut in real life.

At best, I'm a 4. I know a bunch about MK2s, and Kabar/Western fixed blade knives, but not anywhere near everything. Almost nothing about all the folders. Enough about steels to be dangerous.

Same here...Tried to sale a BM 470-1 on a facebook group dedicated to selling sporting goods in my local county and the first reply I got was "who pays that much for a knife".... Most of the people I know are pretty ignorant to knives outside of case and flea market garbage....

I'd say I'm a 7.5, but I rounded down on the poll. Usually I'm a, "knife is half open" kinda guy, but I just can't bring myself to say I know a LOT about knives.
