Rating Cold Steel Knives?

At this point you should be happy to get even VG-1. Cold steel is down to 3 Steels it seems. AUS8, Krupps 4116, and SK-5 High Carbon. Nothing new in San Mai III or any other Steel.

I think Lynn Thompson beat up Freak Show Scott in elementary school.

I was put off by their over-the-top adverstising so hadn't considered their knives for many years. I came across some reviews about their Andrew Demko designed Tri-ad lock folders which were very positive, so thought I'd given them another try. Their American Lawman and AK-47 folders are excellent IMO. (I often carry the AK-47 since I like its 'Wave' like quick opening feature.) They do a good job with AUS8 - I find them easy to maintain with a good sharp edge. I use mineral oil on these knives and have had no rust issues. I recently ordered a Kobun fixed blade. If that knife is half decent it is a screaming deal at the $30 I paid for it including shipping. Like a lot of the guys on these forums, I have quite a few knives including expensive customs. When it comes to the actual tasks a knife is called on to do, I haven't found that knives costing 5 to 20 times more, necessarily cut 5 to 20 times better. I do wish they were made in the USA though.

So far I've owned/used 2 SRKs one Carvon V and one San Mai III, a Spike, a Scimitar Spike, Rajahs II & III, The Spartan, 2 Steel Tiger Karambits(gifts from a beautiful lady), wearing a Safe Maker I attitude adjustment system on paracord for a necklace right now... Not to mention many of the "grivory" toys such as the delta dart etcetc...

So far I've been... satisfied with thier performance. I LOVE the Rajah II and my San Mai SRK. Only one I have been disappointed with is The Spartan. The pocket clip and the opening action both suck. They are not the best knife company, but for what you pay, they are a great value.

Marketing... Well, I look at it this way, they gave me the dvd for free, and I got to laugh at lynn making an ar$e out of himself. If I were a wealthy CEO/president what
ever, had a knife company to play with, and didn't have to worry about money, I'd play ninja too. So I don't blame the guy.

If they'd offer better steels, warranties and prices, they'd get a 10, but... 7/10 Just my .02$

Until Other companies start offering folders in the sizes coldsteel is offering them then I am still going to think highly of them. But until that time, I'm sticking with my large espada.

Cold Steel currently ranks 3-4th for me, depending on the day. I like my Spyderco's, Benchmades' and Case's a little better usually, but Cold Steel makes a lot of designs that scratch an itch that those companies don't. My Spartan is my favorite large folder, my American Lawman is my favorite beater, and my Ti-Lite is a fun, toy that can actually be used. The XL Espada, Rajah II, XL Voyager all seem like really fun big folders, and the Spear Point Recon 1 is begging for a spot as a larger beater. I love how the Holdout series looks, and hell, I have had a hankering for that Dragon Walking stick for a while, and as my feet and knees continue to degrade to injuries, I see myself owning one sooner rather than later. The only QC issue I have had with them is uneven grinds, and Spyderco and CRK are the only companies I have owned that have not had that issue. It is a brand I feel I can trust.

8.5/10.

Biggest reasons for their survival/success would probably be that a lot of users buy them and internet Cold Steel "haters" give them a ton of free publicity. Several other companies make slight changes to folders and bring out several new models year after year, without coming up with anything very significant or creative, but their fans buy them up regardless (you guys know who they are...always popular on the forums). Usually a new Cold Steel model is something actually a bit unique and/or affordable twist on old design and there is a ready market for it, so they do rather well and have their own less vocal group of fans.

LOL well we did grow up in nearly the same area (less than 20 miles apart). But I am a few years older than he and we never met until a year or so ago (very briefly, he will have no recollection of it I'm sure). I was told that he had one of my Freaked Fotos (Captain Cold Steel) in his Office for a while. I wonder if it is still there?

No doubt he could beat the crap out of me now if I were dumb enough to go toe to toe with him. But I don't really think his ability to beat up someone 100lbs lighter than he in a toe to toe has much to do with how his knives, company or general deportment should be rated or judged. I will also state that in my small collection of knives my very favorites are Cold Steel. I have a Talwar, Large Espada (Not the G10) and an older IX master tanto that are all that I could ask of any knife, they are superb! All but the Large Espada are no longer in production.

But a few good knives does not a great company make or the right to act as Cold Steel does towards many of their customers and to other members of the Knife Making Community. But that is Just an opinion.

With all the competition and choices out there, how do they survive?

same as Burger King and the Whopper. same as Burger King and the Whopper. Some people even think the Burger King is cool

I own a number of Cold Steel knives, both made in US and foreign, and find them all to be of good quality and value for what I pay.
As for the company, marketing, and owner goes, I'm not buying them, just what they produce, and they do make a lot of great products, even with some design/metal changes in recent times.

no it's bad blood, FSS got himself banned on the Cold Steel forum for being a troll, now he is acting out like a little child, and burning bridges.

I would have to say that this is a typical "first post" from one of the usual suspects who did end up with the "biggest stick" on another forum, and that is how they framed my final exchange on that forum. Yes those bridges are burnt but I smell sulfur on the fingers of someone other than myself.

And I have to say that being called a troll by a person that was banned from that same forum for describing his desire to perform sexual acts with another member's wife is a little ironic.

So its worth it then to wait on a US made custom maker than to go with one of theres?
If you live with the Aus8 (I can) I don't think there is another Large Folder (if that's what you want) that compares with the Large Espada with the polished bolsters. That is unless you find someone to make it for you at a substantial cost.

So you see I like a double whopper with cheese and bacon sometimes too. But I don't care what fanboys say, not everything on the Menu at Burger King is Steak and their front man could look a little less frozen.

you still don't get it do you, , you were bested by a better man who did end up have the bigger stick (at least you are smart enough to recognise that), and now because you can't post at CS forums you are coming to other forums and poisoning them. It doesn't matter any way, BF mods will soon learn that you are a cretin and troll. I won't miss your ramblings at CS(thankfully you had them deleted, you cut and run before you were banned permanently, coward), and from the posts in the Warmongers Lounge neither will any one else..... I am more then pleased to have played a small part in your demise on CS forum.

Now to the OP, Cold Steel knives are quality blade ware, most are functional and well priced. I do have to say I prefer their fixed blade line up, most of their pocket knives just don't do it for me. The combo of my CS Trail Master san maiIII and CS Master Hunter san maiIII, is IMHO one of the best "sets" one can buy for bush craft/hunting etc.

I don't like the new Cold Steel knives because the blades aren't polished. In the past, though, their heat treat has been top notch and the blades exceptionally sharp. I carry them frequently with other knives and I give them an "8" because I like their knives with long blades. No other knife company offers 6- or 5-inch blades. They now offer the strongest folders on the market and I assume their steel is still good.

My Trailmaster San Mai III was crazy in all ways. Awesome knife which I actually regret trading.
