RATs and Rangers, who do you like more?

That sounds like Cliff Stamp.

.

Are you trying to offend me?:D

O.K., I own D2 and 1095 knives. The D2 will hold the edge a little bit longer, but it is a lot more difficult to get it shaving sharp. To me a clear disadvantage for a knife that will be used for bushcraft, etc.
D2 is more brittle, 1095 tougher, but a good heat treatment given, this is probably more of theoretical value.

I'll second everyone's feelings on Justin at Ranger Knives. He's a helluva good guy and makes a nice knife. You can't go wrong with anything he does - period. But, as to the comment about us, it sound likes you've never dealt with RAT's customer service and maybe had a run-in with Ontario's customer service (two totally separate things). We can't speak for Ontario, but we back our knives 100 percent with no questions asked. Our customer service is second to none so I'm sorry you feel that we're nothing more than "Corporate America Crap."

I'll take the Ranger. Just in is great to do business with, his knives do everything well. The RATs are just more corporate america crap, get a Ranger or ask someone who has one to lend it to you, the quality is there.

As to D2 vs. 1095 who cares they both take a helluva edge. Metal is metal once you get over 420 and 440a.

I own 6 RAT knives and Mike has helped me a few times with harware or minor items he could have just blown me off or not answered my emails but Rat knives have a great warranty and customer service as well and for the service Mike has shown me ,I will continue to purchase RAT/ RC knives... saving my stash to buy a RC3 as we speak....

Jeff, customer service means a great deal to me so it's very comforting that you guys care so much. I very much look forward to beating the absolute hell out of your knife. :) Also, at some point, I'd like to do the adventure training course. Either way, I'm sure I'll enjoy your products. I can't wait to get it.

So now the question is, who do I get a couple of kydex sheaths for these things from. I will admit that I'm not big on patience so I'd like to find someone that already makes them that i don't have to send my knives off too.

Dylside, that be Eric ON SCENE TACTICAL SHEATHING on the Kydex sheathing get a firesteel loop added to the sheath too if you like to use a firesteel...excellent pricing too !

I actually just looked them up through Normark's signature. Their stuff definitely looks top notch.

I am a Ranger kind of guy myself, but I have and use RATs as well. My two favorites are the RAT3 and the TAK-1.

In case you would like to see some side by side comparsion photos, here are some I took of one of my Ranger RD7s and a RAT7.

For EDC, I like the RAT, specifically the RAT-3. For larger blades that's gonna see abuse, I'd go with the Ranger, just look at the thickness of it!

Mike and Jeff of RAT are awesome! But so is Justin of Ranger. Tough call..

Tolly has some great pictures, but let me just add that the RAT7 is actually closer in size to the Ranger RD6. Personally I love them both and often bring both along. The RATs are a little better cutters and the Rangers chop better. But they're both high quality products for reasonable money. And backed by very personable people in Mike & Jeff, and Justin.

As long as Ontario is in your name, your synonomous with Ontario's customer service. Sorry, I bought your products twice and twice I was very disappointed. I'm not looking for a handout. Just letting you know your product is inferior head to head with Ranger.

Chef,

All I can do is offer my apologies to you if Ontario disappointed you with their customer service or quality. It's not the way Mike and I treat folks in our knife or training business, nor will we tolerate a company treating us this way if we're paying good money for a product or service. In a nutshell, I don't blame you for writing Ontario off. I know I would if I got slighted after paying good money. Just so you know, some of what you have brought out is the reason Mike and I started our own knife company away from Ontario. When it comes to collaborations our hands are sometimes tied on certain aspects. The only reason I jumped on this thread is Mike and I want everyone to know that we don't operate that way. Our customer always have, and always will, come first. If Ontario ever slights anyone on Ontario RAT customer service then contact Mike and I and we will get it resolved, even if we have to pay for a new product for the customer out of our own pocket.

As a side note, there are a lot of good companies in this industry. Justin is first class all the way, but there are production makers who I feel the same way about. Kabar, for example, are good folks and I'm looking forward to the Becker line coming out through them.

Best regards,

Jeff

Hey Jeff

:thumbup:Drop me a link so I can take a peek-to be honest I never gave RAT a second thought after my Ontario problems. Now that you guys are on your own I'll check out your line. Knives aren't cheap and good knives are tools you buy once, whether its a Gyuto, Camp Knife or Hunter. As someone who uses them daily its nice to find the companies not gauging on price (because of wonder metals or magical abilities) and giving top quality service.

Zeke,

You can check them out at www.ratcutlery.com. Being that we're new, we just have the RC-3 (comparable to the RAT 3) available right now. The RC-4 and RC-6 should be available by mid-January. Our focus on this new line is upgrading sheathing, upgrading overall quality, and making sure there is a no questions asked warranty and 100 percent customer service policy in place.

Note to moderators: If this violates any rules by posting up our web site, please remove it and just leave a link to my email address (jeff@ratcutlery.com) in it's place.

Thanks,

Jeff

Dang it Jeff, your killing me....I am looking forward to the RC-3 ;now you saying RC-4/RC-6 ....Glad my B-day is in January:D...oh Honey Guess what I want for my B-day ? :) Can't wait to see'em....

We're running behind right now on the new models due to a huge amount of orders we're filling with the DEA on some custom RC-3s, but they should be out by mid-January. We have a pic of the RC-4 posted on our forums here: http://www.jungletraining.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3949

The RC-6 will be similar to the Ontario RAT-7, only shorter and will feature molded sheathing similar to the RC-3 system with a lot of different carry options.
