Rats/rust/TSA

I've always felt that one needs to have worked for the Gubmint to properly hate the bastids.

Now THAT is probably the most truthful statement that has been posted on the RAT forums in months! Every federal agent I know hates their boss.

This type of story is why I am nervous about traveling with a handgun in checked bagage :grumpy: (although not many other choices when travelling by air - short of shipping ahead). Anyone else have these concerns? Any good ideas?

Years ago, before 9/11, a group of us (all cops) flew to Washington, D.C. for the annual national law enforcement memorial service. We booked our flight well in advance and checked to see how we should handle our weapons. The airline advised that the guns could be placed in our checked luggage (not acceptable to us) or placed in a locked case for carry-on. We purchased a nice secure gun case and locked our weapons inside. The ammo was in our checked luggage. When we boarded the plane, we advised the airline staff of the contents of the case and presented our credentials.

Little did we know what would follow. We took our seats and waited for takeoff. We sat and sat and sat, wondering why the departure was delayed. Finally, a flight attendant came and advised that the pilot refused to take off unless the guns were removed from the passenger compartment. We said that we were following the guidelines laid down by his employer. Ultimately, we were advised that the pilot had final say. The only way we could get him to get over it was to place the case full of guns in the cabin with the pilot. They told us at the end of the flight that we could have worn the loaded guns in holsters and they would have had no concerns. WTF?!?

In subsequent years, we chose to drive. I can only imagine what would happen nowadays.

I'm just glad I don't have to fly because I would be so pissed off constantly about it.

Me too. I have no desire to leave this continent and I will drive to my North American destinations unless extreme circumstances dictate otherwise.

Sadly, we have to fly several times a year. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it but it takes too damn long to paddle a canoe to SA and the road is not finished over the Darien Gap!

Probably because holstered on your person they were totally under your control.

I know an FBI Agent who had to fly on FBI Business and they allowed him to carry his sidearm, loaded and concealed and made him put his Chris Reeve Sebenza in checked luggage, true story.

"Respect the water at all times, Son. The water will take you away from this world." - Don Rearic Sr.

He fought in the Pacific, I listened to him and have not drowned yet. :D

And the hits just keep on comin'! :D

Do you have a link to the one you purchased and can you send me pictures of your's if it has an integral lock OR the "approved" lock you are using?

The one I have is this one, I think. It has external combination locks- just whichever "approved" ones you can get at Target. I think Pelican cases are approved as well, which are probably nicer. I wish I'd known that, as I already have several Pelican cases. :o

That looks very similar to the one we used except ours was larger to accommodate more guns.

"...padlocking anything to the frame of the suitcase is novel as long as they can tell what it is without having to open something else up in which case your luggage might be disposed of by them and a robot with a .12 Ga. Shotgun."

Nothing so exotic. Just knife, multitool, similar stuff that can’t go in a carry-on. The Izula even has a nice hole in the pommel for just such an occasion.

i should put a crap smeared diaper in the top of my luggage when we fly next week. then i can put the mr's knives under the baby clothes!

we've flown several times and had no issues.

jeff- water really?

I'm w/ you CRR no spiders, heights and closed spaces! when i need something from under my bed I send one of my kids under to get it.

I don't mind creeks and rivers too much, but I do have an absolute fear of drowning. Just get close to water boarding me and I'll tell you anything you want to know! Wouldn't make a good spy.

Jumping outta planes and hanging on a cliff face is not an issue to me.
