Rattler

I remember as a kid going out with my uncle during the winter down on the Gulf Coast to catch rattlesnakes. We would find a giant gopher tortoise (not many of these left since they cut down all the long leaf pine) hole where the snakes would den during the cold. We would run a garden hose down and put some gasoline in the hose and blow. The fumes would run the snakes out and we would catch them as they would be sluggish in the cold.

Love GSP's - great dogs; when I was a boy my great uncle Rich was known in the county as a top quality trainer of GSP's - he's long gone and so are the birds. OH

Doc, that's daring. As long as they don't come near our house we leave them alone. No one got bit when you did that?
Hunter, that's great. I grew up during the hey day of Bobwhites in East TX.. My Dad raised German Shorthaired Pointers and us boys hunted under them. I thought it was a good experience. We are hoping this one turns out good. DM

David, we never got bit because the snakes could hardly move. I would not try that nowadays. I am much smarter and a LOT slower!

It is a shame the bobwhites are gone from a lot of the country due to habitat loss. When I was a kid we could shoot them all day. It is rare to see them in the South any longer.

Yes. But they are making a come back in East Texas & Georgia. As the farming practices are changing and work on Fire Ants is helping. We can hope. DM

Here's a Great Basin Rattler I killed a few years back. It was in the backyard and my wife, grand kids, an our dogs were too so it had to go. Got it with my shotgun. We generally see 6 or 8 a year around the place but I only dispatch the ones that are in our yard or very near by.

David...We are currently on our 3rd GSP...great dogs & natural born comedians!

Modoc, I've not seen one of those type rattler. When they come near the house and lives or expensive livestock are at risk. Then...
jbmon, I've seen those cottonmouths. They are bad news and I've noticed they are aggressive. Plus, I've noticed they have a foul odor. A dog with a little experience can easily smell them. Thanks, DM

zak, thanks for these encouraging words. Our family raised 2 litters of German Shorthairs back in the late 60's and early 70's.
So, I hope this one turns out even better. This breeder (Quail County Kennel) has done a good job with bloodline, housing and
preserving the foundational characteristics of the breed. We have Gambel quail and my 334 Trapper does a good job on them. DM

Congrats on David's German Short Haired Pointer. A fine looking pup. He should make a great hunting dog.

In contrast, this is our (the wife's actually) new German Long Haired Dachsund - just 12-weeks old now. She will make a great lap dog.
