Rattler

Times change.
When I was a kid we shot every hawk we saw. We killed every snake we saw. Plinking included turtles, songbirds, chipmunks, red squirrels........almost anything that moved. I got to be a pretty good shot with all that killing.
Then I grew up.

never killed stuff just to kill as a kid or adult. have no love for it. hunting and eating what i kill im okay with. pit vipers i have no use for or love for. if they flee, they live. if they stay around or cause trouble they get put down.

interesting side note. saw a southern ringed neck snake in my yard the other day. havent seen one of those for years. no i didnt kill it.

A snake may not "flee" for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with aggression towards humans or dogs. Never in my life needed to kill a snake. Maybe 'cause I grew up with a snake handler. Not the religious kind but more of the "Nature Boy" type.

everyone has their own beliefs and experiences. seen snake handlers licensed and experienced, be bit by snakes they say wont ever bite.

too each their own.

We have 37* this morning which means we won't see a rattler or a snake of any kind. We are a week late for a frost but due. Now, snake
sightings will be rare. A little more at ease, for my new dog. He'll have to learn about these dangers next year. DM

Got this guy with one shot from a 38 on Columbus Day While fishing and quail hunting. Western db. He was good eating and after I skinned him up with my 110, his skin will make a good hat band

A good photo. The larger ones like yours do have some meat on them. They are easy to skin with a sharp knife. Thanks, DM

I've seen a few ringed neck snakes at my place in Kentucky. Found one under my tent when taking it down.

Tony, was it under the floor at the side you slept on?From what I've read they are non poisonous. DM

Ring necks are small and harmless. Their mouths are too small to bite.
yep. used to be bunches everywhere when i was a kid. havent seen one until the other day. same goes for many harmless species. they are making a comeback down here.

Ged, thank you. A bite from a Prairie Rattler would have done any one of us in. So, were on the watch, my wife too when she walks. DM
