Ratweiler or Ranger RD7

Should I start a new thread on review for ranger RD in the review forum????Oops, forgot to ask my question. Has anybody done a review on any of the Ranger RD series of knives??????? Demolition testing?????? Again, should I start a new thread????

Instead of starting a bunch of useless threads, you should probably use the search functon here and in other forums and Google to learn about all the stuff you are asking. Just my opinion.

There is no perfect metal. There is more than just steel that goes nto making knives. Lurk in the custom forum as well, read old threads there about the knifemakers and how they do stuff. You will learn volumes.

you don't even know what you want, or how you want to use it. Do you realize that there isn't one tool that does everything well.

Great way to welcome a new guy Cobalt! :barf: It's no wonder this forum has the reputation it has. I'd bet with over 2300 posts you never started a useless thread, or posted a useless post? If you haven't that last one sure fits the bill.

UGA Dawg, it sounds like a great idea! I don't think it has been done before, but I'm sure that someone will let us know.

Are emersons any good???? I wanted to know because I`ve heard they`re good and I`ve they`re bad and overrated. Heard the same thing about Strider.

Emerson knives are excellent. Overrated? That's just a subjective statement based on personal preference. Same with Strider. Both knives are excellent quality and tough as nails. You can't go wrong with either, it just depends on which you like better.

Peace.

This is not about emerson or strider or anything else other than Ranger and Ratweiler......please stick to the original question.......and thanks guys for a lot of help . This forum is awesome .

I actually ordered the Ranger today as well as the Ratweiler Friday .....can't wait to get them in my hands . One thing in favor of Ranger , I got to speak to a person , got to ask a person questions , got the chance to make sure that he and I both know what I wanted . Took me three days of e-mails just to figure out exactly what my options were with the Ratweiler .

Ya know I've always wondered if these guys apprenticed at Busse. Both the Fehrmans and Rangers DO look like the older Busse's. It just could be that great minds think alike, but Busse did use 5160 for his apprentice blades.

They remind me of the old straight handles, but I'll keep my INFI, thank you, especially the straight handled INFI.

Rob, Justin got a bunch of Jerry's old 5160 apprentice blades a while back and turned them into the RD Series. Also Jerry and Justin are friends. Justin has a forum on KF, his wife and some of us were talking about this very thing just yesterday. :)

Both ratweiler and RD are great blades! One thing to be aware of with the Ranger knife is the lack of or very unsecure front guard. The smooth micarta scales don't help either.

I have both a Ratweiller and a RD9... sorry, no RD7. So, bearing that in mind, I can't compare apples to apples: the Ratweiller is a utility/chopper at 7" and the flat ground RD9 is a big chopper at 9".

What I can say is a reiteration of the others: The quality of product from both companies is impeccable and I would stake my life on 'em in a survival situation.

SRKW has the benefit of years of Busse experience and equipment behind them in their operation (I know, I know, different people, different shifts, same equipment. :) .) The downside is that ordering does take some time and they are quite addictive. I don't know if the addictive part is good or bad; it depends if you ask me or my wife! The micarta fit of the Ratweiller is really nice. Easy to sharpen. Holds an edge well.

The RD9 is a product of Ranger Knives / Justin Gingrich. He (and his fantastic wife) run a nice Ranger Knife forum over on Knifeforums.com. He stands behind his work (as does SRKW) and is genuinely concerned about your satisfaction. I sure wish he were a carmaker too!! Indeed, the RD series were originally apprentice-cut blanks from Busse knife works that Justin bought, modified/ground, heat treated (excellent, by all accounts I've read,) and sharpened/coated. My RD9 is a great chopper! My chopper I finished my RD9 with a polished spine! Polished Spine

Basically, you can't go wrong with either one in terms of having a durable, hard use knife. Just pick the one (or both) that works for you!! :D

What about availability? Im interested in a Ratweiler but am concerned about delivery times. Does anyone know what the timeframe is for getting one now?

The RD 7 as far as I know is available now, that's a plus.

Delivery time on the Ratweiler is anywhere from 3-12 weeks :thumbdn: Maybe its worth the wait . My RD7 should be in by the end of the week if this new hurricane doesnt wipe us out .

OK, that makes perfect sense. Don't have one, but have yet to hear any negatives about Justins work or customer service.
