Razor edge book, guides and hones passaround

Edge tester, a plastic pen should do the same thing.
Thanks John for the chance to play with the sharpening system. It works good. I am mainly a free hand sharpener. I do use a Lansky clamp with a DMT rod and hone if I need to regrind an edge. I didn’t like the Razor Edge system. For me the clamps are hard to get on the knife right. After some time and some playing I can see it may become easier. The stones work well, the coarse removes metal fast, but will dish out. I don’t know how much it was used but it was dished pretty good. I wonder if it will last until the end of the passaround. The Fine stone is very fine and puts on a good edge. In fact it is finer than I normally go. They both are pretty thin stones and can be tricky to keep still. A wet paper towel underneath works pretty good. I would rate the system a 5 out of 10.
I am hoping to ship this out tomorrow/today Wednesday. Didn’t make it in time today.

I've used a plastic pen in place of the tester a few times and it does work. However, the tester's plastic, though slick, is softer than the hard plastic in most pens, so it's gentler on the edge.

I couldn't get to the PO today, sorry. I'll get it out tomorrow for sure.

Just received the kit last evening. I'll give it a try and mail to the next person next week.

Thanks,

Brad

Very nice Passaround guys! I've always been interested in that book, just to read up on what they have to say, when this is all said and done, if I could borrow your book, I'll make a nice slip sheath for a folder for the loan of just the book?

I use the Large set of Norton hones and do all my sharpening free hand, have tried the Lansky and felt it too restricting to me, have a sharpmaker, I call it a SharpKeeper as it, with the normal stones, don't remove enough metal quick enough to create new bevels for me anyways. But the flat stones work best for me and then onto a leather strop for a final.

Good stuff, everyone should know how to sharpen their own knives!

Benchmade has a secret I think, as their edges lately are exceptional! With the edge almost a convex type edge, push cuts are extremely easy with their knives...lately! Not like before!

Gary,
Once I get the razor edge items back from the passaround I will send you the book.

Here's my review:

I liked the system. I had read the book some time ago and it unlocked how to get a really sharp edge for the desired job/knife for me. I also started using a smooth edge steel.

Up until trying the Razor Edge System, I've only used a Lansky System and sharpening sticks. I don't know if their stones are better or worse than anyone else's. I do know the edge guides gave me the advantage. I plan to get one of the systems before too long.

By the way, everyone should own the book.

Thanks again,

Brad

Brad:

Received the pass around package yesterday.

I will try and "play" with the toys this week-end and get them enroute to the next person early next week.

BTW, whoever added the "reading makes your life wonderful" sentitment has the right attitude and their parents should be commended.

Pahl:

I just took a quick inventory of the stuff in the box. Looks like everything arrived intact. However, I did not find a list of (future)recipients with addresses.

Can you e-mail me Burkstar's address and any anyone else who is still slated to get this before it is returned to you? I'll add the list to the package before I pass it on.

Thanks

Hello,
Looks like this are going ok with the passaround.
I have been playing around with the old computer and setting up a new one.
In doing this I have lost all the address I had for the passaround.
One of the members that was on the passaround emailed me asking that they be removed from the list because they were leaving the US and would not be around when it got to them.
I know longer have that information and don't know who it was.

RifRaf: If it's not to much trouble could you contact the next person on the passaround list to see if they are still interested in it and get there shipping address from them? Would be less emails and maybe take less time that way.

Thanks,

Pahl: Already taken care of!

Burkstar sent me his address. I plan to get the package on its way early next week.

Burkstar: Heads up The book and toys are being mailed Wednesday.

Pahl: Thanks for the opportunity to handle and play with your toys.

Before share I my comments, I will preface them by stating that I was taught to freehand sharpen many years ago as a teenager. I have tried and occassionally still use sharpening "systems". While the systems work (for me), I still do most of my sharpening freehand and reserve the "systems" for blade re-profiling.

Having previously read the book, I was looking forward to actually trying the stones, guides and tester.

I used as a test a really basic hand made knife I picked up on E-bay. I do not know the metallurgy, my guess is L6. The blade thickness is .187

Here are my comments:

The guides locked up tight, and held during the sharpening process. I did notice they left marks on the blade, perhaps I overtightened. I observed the guides sustained a fair amount of wear from being pushed across the stone and suspect they have a limited life.

The coarse stone was well dished when I received it but continued to work fine. I suspect the coarse stone's life expectancy is quite short given its role as grinding the primary bevel. It removed blade material quickly and I was able to bring up a wire edge with little effort.

The fine stone was flat and appeared to have little use(I believe it was used as much as the coarse stone it simply did not have the same wear characteristics). The fine stone rapidly removed the wire edge and refined the edge set by the coarse stone.

The edge tester surprised me as it was made from plastic (I expected metal). The first time I used it to test the knife I just sharpened, it caught in a slight nick probably the result of an earlier test with a heavier knife. I rotated the tester, reset the knife and it stayed without sliding. I did not play a lot with the tester but my opinion once again is, it has a limited life. If one is not careful, sharp heavy knives will probably nick the surface quite easily.

Overall Impression: The system is easy to use and it works. The guides provide an sure-fire method for ensuring the blade is held at a consistent angle. The stones perform as advertised. I could recommend the system components for any individual who needs/prefers to use guides.

Got it this morning. Haven't had time to unpack it yet, but will definitely check it out first thing tomorrow morning. Will give you my impression in a couple of days.

Hi!

Although I'm new in here I have quite an experience in sharpening knives. If you want to count me in.

Today I got the razor edge items back, thanks!

I have not been on the forums much do to work and other interest right now.

Just wanted to let you all know that the items made it back home :)

Have a great weekend!
