Razor edge systems vs Edge Pro

I called Razor Edge Systems and changed the order to the 8" stones.

Good deal. The R/E folks have always been very helpful and flexible everytime that I've called them.

Is it necessary to get both the book and the video? If we get one, which would be better? or do we really need to get both.

Also, is it necessary to get the steel?

I have the Razor Edge 6" stones and love them. They work well. I do everything free hand though so the guides are a waste for me personally. I have been very happy with the edges the stones bring. Reprofiling is pretty easy using the course stone too.

They seem to be every bit as great as the Japanese water stones to me only they don't seem to wear away quite as fast or need water. I've never used the EdgePro system but I know from what I've read that it is a good one too. I just stay away from guide type systems in general because they have never been needed. I've never had a sharp maker either and hear they are also pretty good but I don't see how anyone could need much more than these two stones and a strop provide you.
