Parker - what kind of handle is that on the RC-3, if it is one?
Mine's a little pipsqueak of a fixed blade. I carry it in the sheath system's plastic "lower end," in my right front pocket and not much shows at all.
Is it a knife called Bear Cat? Looks big, if so, who makes it and what's going on with the paracord dealio?
Okay, sorry - I do forget from time to time not everyone is a Mad Dog guy as well as a RAT guy.
The knife in that sheath is a Mad Dog Pygmy ATAK. It's a blade of just under 5 inches and a handle about 4.75 as well.
The handle is made of a G10-like composite with a higher density and is attached to what a lot of folks would call a 3/4 tang with a really neat epoxy, which more or less chemically bonds the handle to the blade. They do NOT come off, period, unless you have a hammer, chisel, a vise and some time on your hands.
The stock is 1/4 inch x 1.5 inches, and it is a very nice full-heft knife.
The sheath was made by Wookie and he makes some of the finest kydex I've used in ten years. It's the heavy-grade kydex and it has no retention save the proper fit and click of the sheath. I wore this one a few times before moving it to someone else (I prefer a Bear Cat, half an inch more blade, but 3/16 stock) and two of those occasions were an hour's run and an hour's bike ride.
The p-cord is a very clever little option which I stole a while back. The loop is just big enough to go around the belt and is tied in a simple knot. The cord holds the knife in place, but it lets the sheath move back and forth WITH you, versus held in one place and therefore poking you in the ribs or kidney. If you sit, stand, sit, run, walk, drive, stand, walk, sit, etc in a day, it's a very comfy and practical way to carry.
It's also an exceptional way to conceal. In a sheath like this, I can conceal a 6-inch or 7-inch blade under a sport coat or windbreaker. 5 inches is EASY.
When the knife is withdrawn, the kydex indexes with the draw-stroke. If you've have any experience you've had where the sheath is rigidly pointed in one direction and by the positioning of your body you wanted to withdraw in a slightly different direction, you'll realize that by lining up the sheath with the direction you want to yank your knife, the sheath will no longer be a potential bind up point.
And when you want to re-sheath, you find the opening with the tip, then drive the knife home and the sheath again re-orients in the direction you're going.
I tend to think of a 5.4 inch blade as a sort of "average day's carry."
Let me know if you want to know any more about this sort of carry, maybe I can convince the wife to take a few pics of the knife from carry to engagement, etc.
The RC-3 sheath actually carries in a similar position for me very well, and again is a very comfy all-day carry.
Hey, if the ESEE guys are listening? I'd love to see the RC4 come with a lower-profile sheath like the RC-3 AND a 1/8 inch stock blade. I do not need the false edge at all.
