RC-5: It's Not Just for SERE

those are good pics HD, and congrats on your daughter getting into the AF, SERE school would be pretty good I reckon, if that your type of thing

and this is another reason why I want a RC-5, keep hearing opinions on its not a camp knife, and that may be/is true to a certain extent i suppose, but this just proves ti to me that you can use it.
thanks again Horn Dog

This area of Georgia is great from October-May. After that, it's bug infested, humid, hot, hell hole. If I was a rich Yankee, I'd have a Winter home on Jekyll Island and a Summer home in Maine. Heck, even some Canadians do that. Here are a few more shots of Jekyll (they should pay me for this).

You call that Hell? I call that Heaven, brother!

Yeah, but you like the Amazon jungle, Jeff. Come down here in Summer and camp down in the Altamaha swamps. You'll feel right at home. :D

BTW: That RC-5 has turned out to be quite a camp knife. Don't tell the Marines about it, or they'll want one, too. Even a jarhead wouldn't break an RC-5.

The more mosquitos and humidity there is, the better I like it!

Here's where I chime in the reason I LOVE sub zero temps. Total lack of anything lacking a spine.

Here are a few more shots of the RC-5 in action. Only about 1" of the tip was sticking through the other side of the log, so that point took a tremendous beating. Weaker tips would have broken. Also, I had to beat on the handle quite a bit. No damage at all. This is one tough camp knife.

I know this isn't Jeff's favorite design, but there is a lot to be said for an overbuilt knife that can take this kind of a pounding.

Great post. I camped at Jekyll Island when I was kid as well. That was probably around 20 years ago. We visited Sapelo as well. I sure love the coast!

So do you think the RC5 would be a better camp knife than the RC6? Why isnt it one of jeffs favorite designs? Allot of people say the RC6 is a better knife than the RC5 and i should get an RC6 instead. What do you think? ill be using the knife for splitting wood, chopping, hacking, cutting, slicing, digging and general camping usage. If i got the RC6 i would be kind of hesitant to beat on it but with the 1/4 " thick blade of the RC5 i would beat the hell out of it without a worry in my mind. Also, whick knife cuts better? does the RC6 get a sharper edge cause its a thinner blade?

Your opinion?

Thanks

From my limited time using it as a camp knife....i loved it. It will be on every deployment and camping trip as long as its there. I also will be taking it on all long distance hiking. Most of the big time hikers would shun me for carrying more then a pocket knife, but as far as im concerned....id lug that weight around on my right leg with no remorse

Either knife is a fine camp knife. The RC-6 is lighter and longer. It's flat ground 3/16" thick blade can take a thinner edge for better cutting and slicing. That is not to say the RC-5 won't cut. It cuts just fine. If you want a heavy duty camp knife, I'd say get the RC-5. It is tougher than the RC-6, but the RC-6 is tough enough for me. The RC-5 is heavy for a 5" blade knife. I like them both, but for heavy baton work like I did yesterday, I feel more comfortable doing that with the RC-5. That said, I have done the same thing with the RC-6 with no damage done.

Still contemplating which knife to get. Can u make the RC5 ridiculously sharp just like the RC6 or is it impossible due to its 1/4 " blade thickness? Im only going to buy 1 knife since thats all i can afford. i want it to be the right one and after some research ive decided to go with a RAT Cutlery knife

My RC-5 will shave. But thinner blades just slice a bit better. Either knife will be fine. Just choose whichever one appeals to you the most. They both work fine for camp knives.

Jeff, you are a crazy person. Bugs make life hell, thats why I hang out near treeline.

To each his own I guess, thats what makes this such a great place to be.
