You are missing my point here.
A reasonable business person understands the economies of scale. There has to be a point where the number produced/ordered is most economical. Especially when extras are being included, like numbering, special screws and the like.
See, only making "x" number, based on pre-orders, might not mean the individual cost is most economical, therefore the unit cost will be higher for the buyer/Rat Pack member.
And, that additional cost can impact the number of orders.

Some will pay more to have the uniqueness, some will not be able to justify any additional cost over a standard model.

Jeff, is there a target number you would like to see in this run?

Les, I think your missing the point.

Were not concerned with profit margins, economies of scale nor popularity with this project. Were concerned with what the majority of the RAT pack members desire.

We've already boiled it down to the lowest common denominator, using stock and standard RC parts will keep the price attractive. Shon is adding in some extra's to make it even more special.

Were being sold the knives at a price that allows RAT and Rowen to not LOSE money. They're not concerned with making anything off of this, it's a favor.

If RAT offered up a pink coated blade with orange scales and green liners and thats what the pack members chose, thats what RAT would make regardless of the complete and total unsellability of the finished product.

It does start to limit the uniqueness and collectability when anyone outside the Pack can buy one. Especially at the same price under the same offer.

Anyone outside the Pack should not get one that's numbered, for sure. There needs to be just a little something special about those member numbered ones!:D

:D it is unique to only those who hold that number,I mean the way it Stand per the voting poll it looks like an RC3mil with your RP number....
if someone opted out of the purchase of there number RP Knife why cant Jeff sale it to someone willling to pay for it.
I guess I should of offered Pink as a Blade coating and maybe the results woulda been slightly different :D

131 Pack members, 135 total handle option voters. As of 11:55EST today.
See? The poll can get skewed rather easily, or at least influenced so that the final outcome is not representative of the Rat Pack collective.

This is just a prelininary poll to get a feel of what people want. We'll have another poll of finished combos when this one closes.

As I understand it, the RAT pack knives will not be available to anyone outside the pack, but the extras will be available to pack members un numbered.

I understand. I see the spirit of the offer and am appreciative of it! I would be happy with any choice. I've said that.

But, RC can't lose money. Totally understood. So, the additional features means additional work and cost which must be passed on to the consumer.
Some might not buy the Pack blade if it is much more expensive than the basic blade. And, it would have to be because those basic models benefit from an economy of scale.

To be sure the blade specifics are truly what the Pack wishes, the poll needs to be representative ONLY of Pack members. Right now, it appears anyone can vote on the poll.

I understand the difficulty in getting specs ironed out. It is not my intention of making things more difficult, but to help prevent later problems.
I can only imagine how hard it will be to get 131 Pack members to come to a concensus on the extras (engraving, wording, numbering and the like)!

Somehow, I think it will work out fine!

Screw the pansies complaining about the orange. If ornage is what you want then vote orange. I like the orange. If it wins great if it doesn't I'm not gonna cry like a little girl bc I didn't get my way.

Mrs. S , do you get the same mental image that I have of Jeff staring at his computer, shaking his head, thinking what the hell have I done ? It is like having 140 or so children  and asking them the question "What does everyone want for supper?"
Hang in there Jeff - it will be worth it - you know we are just a high maintenance R.A.T. Pack. :D:D:D

Now we're cooking!

We appeciate your input Les.

Jeff stated that he would be putting these blades out at a discount off of the regular MSRP. I assure you that if the price were to climb to the point that Jeff were to have to charge more, he would chime in and or squash the project.
