Gobe,

I think the RD7 is a great blade you can count on, nice size too. Takes abuse and it looks like you are unafraid to put it through its paces which is what you want in a blade "confidence".

Nice pics thanks.

Nice review, I am currently looking at buying an RD6, my first Ranger knife, so I appreciate your review and also your comments on them Skammer, your "thumbs up" is a significant endorsement for them to me.

You guys are making it to easy for me to spend more money :(

The great thing about Justin is he will go that extra mile for you and customize it within reason and without destroying the blades integrity.

Enjoy this personal attention as once the world catches on this may change due to order volume.

I have had every size in the RD line and loved them all. Justin Gingrich is an excellent man to do business with and the warranty on his blades is second to none. I broke the tip off of my RD7 battoning some dry pecan branches in my back yard. They were probably too large in diameter for the blade length and I was focusing too much impact with my batton out on the very tip. Naturally it broke. I let him know what happened, sent it back and a few days later I had another blade with a little beefier grind. Awesome customer service. Thanks Justin :D .

With a wooden baton? How much of the tip broke? Was there any deflection?

The ranger RD7 is a great blade. I had one for a while, but sold it to a mate that needed it more than me, as my current user is a Swamp Rat camp tramp. Will get another in the future though!!

Approximately 3/4's of an inch Cliff, yes with a very hard, dry, pecan wood baton. The log being split was probably 5 inches in diameter and a bit cumbersome. It was moving all over the place as I batonned and I think I struck it more from the side than on the spine of the tip. Pretty knotty branch as well. I am also a novice with such techniques and was just getting a little practice and making the logs more dumpster friendly. The knife had been used hard for chopping as well as drilling in the same pecan wood. Justin took care of me regardless of the technical nature of the failure.

ive heard good things as well about ranger . i think an rd7 may very well be my next survival knife . how much are they and can you get an all black , full flat grind version?cant afford a busse or swamp rat but think the overall design of both are awesome.

they come coated as std and you can get them in satin as well. All the new ones are flat grind I think. For the money there is no better deal to be had anywhere on a stout knife.

i dont think you can order directly off of rangers web site but i did look at his links and found some at sage creek and brigade quarter masters . couldnt find a black flat grind though except at sage creek and it had orange handles, yuck.i think im gonna settle for the regular grind and maybe reprofile the edge. how well does the regular grind cut/chop as compared to the flat grind?

One thing with Ranger is that you can always contact Justin directly if there is anything special you want done to your blade.

I'll second that, in the last 2 days I have been in contact with him about an RD6, and he is always very quick to answer Private Messages.

gutsy-

if click on the 'contact info' link on the ranger knives webpage, it gives you justin's phone # and his email.

I have the satin flat-grind RD-7 and RD-9. If you count the choil, they have 8" and 10" blades, respectively. I got them from Sagecreek, and service was very good. Excellent values.

hows the performance diference between the regular grind and the flat grind ? if the difference isnt extreme ill just order the one from brigade quarter masters. if there is a big diference ill call justin and see what he says.

just got off the phone with justin and he said i could order straight from him and that he mainly uses the flat grind instead of the hollow nowadays. good guy .
