I punched the dumb a$$ card today.

Long story short, I didn't clamp a blade in the drill press when fixing incorrectly sized pin holes because I was in a hurry. I know better!!! Doh!

Now my thumb is a little slimmer, and I'll be taking a bit of a break from the shop (and work since I can't get gloves over the bandage)...

Thumb vs 12" O-1 fillet at 450 RPM:

On the plus side the fillet knife that did the damage was still shaving sharp after going through thumb and fingernail....

Maybe line on clamping your work could be added?

I use these as drill press clamps.

Fast to setup, huge clamping range, cheap

I keep looking for the brand named vise-grip ones, but no luck
Looks like only the no names are available.

and sharpening is the last step.

Count, do you have a link for those?

Nothing like it here at Menards or Ace...

I know better about both sharpening and clamping...
It was my first attempt with O-1 and such narrow stock (free steel), and I sharpened it to see if HT worked and to see what kind of edge it would take.
Bad excuse, poor technique, and a painful lesson.

If I can save one more person from a narrower digit or worse, it is worth the humiliating post....

Yup. My index finger looks like that from a tablesaw slip. It'll be just fine... plus there will be many more to distract you. I know :-)

ow man, sorry to see that..We all make mistakes..might not feel like it now but your actually lucky..Get better soon..

Damn... it bit you good! I have had a few but never with a sharpened blade. Heal well!

Still beats picking your thumb up off the floor. I got the same thumb 17 years ago with my old drill press. 13 stitches fixed it up pretty good. Hope it heals up fine.

Ouch! Hope that heals quick.

I have a couple of the Delta versions of the clamp posted above by numbers, they work pretty good and are available at Amazon....but I really prefer something beefy like these from Kant Twist:

Lots of pressure with these, and they won't wear as easily as the vise grip style clamps. With repeated heavy duty use the Vise Grip style will start to pop open on you if you clamp it too tight.

First off glad to see you have a thumb:thumbup:.. like Ray said coulda been worse!!
Second if you dont use clamps at least use a stop pin or such, i learned in the plumbing industry running a whole hawg, and damn near gettin my wrist broke about binds and preparing for them to occur!
I would be completely lost without my drilling rig!
Be safe, and heal well friend!

You need to find a new way to test your knives! Sry that happened and hope everything heals quickly!!

Damn man, I'm sitting here eating a bowl of cereal. Or, I was...

You were chasing an existing hole without clamps or something to catch a spin. Shame, shame.

And it was razor sharp? dopeslap.gif

ouch

I Mean DAMN that had to hurt, I agree with Kentucky and others, your lucky you didn't lose that thing (like my uncle did) .

Take care of it and heal up.

I'm a fillet guy as well and when you get yours finished (whenever) I sure would appreciate a picture.

At least you know your HT works..... Good lesson, there are worse ways to learn it.

I use that vise grip style. I put the work right against the base if it. It can't spin or rise that way.

Thanks guys!

I ordered some of the HF clamps this morning.

The irony of the trip to the ER, was the future recipient of the fillet knife was my nurse.
I'm half of a mind to mill out a spot in one of the scales and inbed the side of my thumb in the scale under a layer of acrylic. Doable or a bit tasteless?

It's doable AND tasteless, not that there's anything wrong with that. I hope you heal fast.
