Reaching a stopping point

I have roughly 100 knives. I realize that's a small collection compared to many here. I haven't hit the wall at all but I do have a renewed focus and no longer buy every new knife that comes along. I'm also selling off or giving away knives that I bought while new to the hobby that really don't interest me. Gravy, no PM2??? Isn't that illegal or something??

Im reporting the original post. That is completely absurd. We’re supposed to be talking about real topics. Not buying more knives?? Seriously.:rolleyes:;):):):D

I feel like I'm in the same place, I had $400 knives I sold and bought cheaper s90v and s110v.. now my goal is learning proper knife sharpening techniques.

Sharpening.... That is not a cheaper alternative to the hobby tho. I took that side road once and ended up with enough Japanese waterstones to build a wall, well not really but you get the idea. I do enjoy sharpening as much as collecting knives, A lot of the times I seek to purchase interesting knives so I can have something to sharpen.

stopping point?
but, but what about something like this

not my pic

or bark river crusader in 3V lol

It’s happened to me, several times. Don’t worry, you’ll get over it...

The beauty in coming to the point you’re at is that you can and should be much more selective.

I can’t say that I don’t buy any more knives anymore, but I can say I’ve bought very few in the last 5 years. It takes something very special (to me) to turn my head these days.

Enjoy the feeling, until something else comes along.

Hahah I'm sure in some jurisdictions.... I've played with several PM2s and I understand the popularity but honestly I prefer the Manix in almost every way. I almost got a para 3, but I got a nice deal on the sage, and I didn't have to go buy a $20 clip just to carry the damn thing.

If they Kapara ever becomes available I MIGHT pick one up, but we shall see... Kinda saving for a watch, a bike, and a tattoo.....

I prefer the Manix as well.

I've stopped now. Like you, I have all the bases covered IMO.

Lots of CF, Ti, custom wood and micarta scales, aluminum.

Flippers on bearings and washers, spydie holes, thumbstuds.

S30V, S35VN, S90V, CTS-XHP, D2, M390, Tru-Sharp, and whatever victorinox uses.

Sabre/flat, FFG, and hollow grinds.

Truthfully, I used to carry for multiple reasons. Utility #1, fidget factor #2, and if SHTF self defense.

I've gotten older and I'm disabled. So the SD is out the window. Caney Joe is a far better self defense tool if I need it.

Thus, besides the super tinker I keep in my medicine bag, I've been carrying the Case mini Copperlock my buddy just gave for my 40th. I does pretty much everything I need.

Under the event I need something heavier duty, I can always grab my TSF Beast or ZT 0095S90BLK.

My collection/accumulation currently includes 12 moderns, 2 fixed, 2 traditionals, and 2 SAK's.

Might need to dig around harder. Plenty of things in your rotation that I'd cycle out for something else, and I have seeing how I've owned all but 1 of those knives, but to each their own. I'm sure you'll stumble upon something you cant resist :)

I got to that point recently. Then I realized my kitchen knives were lacking. Then I noticed I could upgrade my sharpener. Then I caught myself browsing the knifemaker's fixed blades for sale sub forum on this site.

I've definitely overlooked kitchen cutlery, but I'm still in college so I don't really cook. One day I'll get myself a nice kitchen set, just not yet. Maybe something in damascus? Hmmmm

I got you ;) Here's my token fixed blade. Don't really carry it that much but I still enjoy it

I have been trying to get the same exact set up did you order the scales separately? Also with the sheath can it be carried upside down?

I'm in a similar position. Nothing new is on my radar.

This happened before, and I just enjoyed my collection for a couple years... and then it happened and I got bitten again.

It's only a matter of time...

When you're bored of folders take a look at fixed blades, and vice versa, just for fun ;)

Dang! My Neato meter got pegged again and I've got a Black Box Winchester sowbelly stockman on the way.--KV

Not sure I'll ever hit a stopping point but I do hit peaks and valleys in buying, selling and trading knives. I went on a bit of a tear the last month or two but at this point, I've stalled out a bit. Just nothing out there that really excites me right now. I'm sure that will change though.

One thing I've done though it try to keep my collection to around 25 folding knives or so. If I buy a new one, I tend to sell another. I've got the "never sell" knives and then I have those that I really like but would sell or trade to make room for something new.

As one poster above mentioned, I just started getting into small fixed blades. Currently trying out the Izula 2, ESEE 3 and a Bradford Guardian 3.

So it's finally happened, I have reached a point in my collection where I honestly don't see the point in buying anything else. I've finally got my rotation to a point where I think I could be set for life, it covers all of my needs. I have flippers, spydie holes, thumb studs, traditionals, super steels, bearings, washers, CF, micarta, TI, overbuilt tanks and slicing machines. Everything an enthusiast could ask for, all covered in 7 knives.

Adding anything else at this point just feels excessive. Maybe I'm just getting jaded? What do you guys think? Anyone else hit a "wall" before? How long did it take you to get back into it?

Here's my rotation. I've got about 12 other cheaper knives from when I first got into this but they sit in a box.

I've hit this point several times. I'm there now actually and I probably won't buy anything else for several months.

That's the way it seems to go. Reach a point of contentment, rest for a while and then start the cycle over again when you get bored. I haven't needed a better knife in years; I've just wanted a different one.

If and when I'm able to get back in the workforce, I'll probably pick up a custom traditional. I'm done with moderns/one hand openers, I have everything I need. Again, carrying the Case mini Copperlock.

I get it.

I look at something new and ask myself if it fills a void. If not, then I compare it to what I own. Is it really that much better than what I already use? Most of the time the answer is no. It's not enough of an increase over what I already have to justify the price. Besides, I find that I have a small handful of knives I reach for and everything else just collects dust. I could very easily get by with just my US made Kershaw Zing and a full-size Griptilian for my day to day use. Add a Vic Cadet for dress occasions and a fixed blade for field use and I'd be done. But, where's the fun in that?

Over the last year, my collection has become smaller. Some went to my daughter and my future son in law. Others disappeared through our Pay it Forward thread.
My goal is just enough folding knives to fill two Boker knife vaults. One for knives I use, another for knives that will be passed on to family when I'm gone. That's twelve knives. Plus a folder in the Jeep Cherokee, one for the bug out bag, and a beater in the tool bag.

There are very few plans for new folders in the future. I'd like to try a Lion Steel TM 1 and a small plain Insingo. I can't think of anything else except maybe trading out my Vic Pioneer for a Cadet.

My wife has told me that when I am gone, she will keep the knife I purchased on our honeymoon. My daughter and her husband will grab what they want and everything else will get donated. No real reason for me to have a huge collection.
