Ready To Purchase My First Real Spyderco. Which Should I Start Off With For Decent $$

Allright guys, I've heard so many great things about Spyderco that I've decided to get one and see for myself what all the fuss is about. Here is the criteria:

1. Best "bang" for the buck.
2. It's got to be inexpensive i.e. $60 & under.
3. Used Spyderco knives are fine with me as long as they haven't been abused.
4. This may be a different four letter word for some but eBay is OK by me. Had some pretty good luck with ebay.

They only experience I have with Spyderco is the Spyderco Bug which is a great little keychain knife that I've used for several tasks. Very nice little knife but I don't know if it's representative of the rest and I'd like something with a 2.5" to 3.5 inch blade.

What do you guys suggest? Also I probably won't be able to purchase till the first of March.

The native pretty much describes what youre looking for:
s30v, 3.125" blade, but maybe a TINY bit over $60

I think the answer is ........Delica! It has a 2 7/8" blade and if you look around you can probably find one in the $50-&60 range, or less.

Didn't even think about the Native....great choice also.

I don't mind going over the posted price point by a few bucks as long as the knife is something that most would think of as something that just feels right in the hand and has a good blade as well.

I have looked at the Native's and they do look pretty good to me but I wanted to bring this question here and get some really strong advice from folks who know Spyderco knives.

I prefer the ergos, as well as the steel, of the native compared to the also mentioned delica. Just my personal opinion, you really can't go wrong with either one

I love the Native; it's my favorite. The Delica/Endura is also the classic Spydie.

Go all in with the Paramilitary 2 even if it is over your $60 limit. You will get one eventually anyway.

Might as well start with a classic...the Endura. Or the Delica if you want a bit shorter blade.
Nothing wrong with the Native either.
Any would be a good choice and meet your criteria.

try manix 2. its $70, but you can have a feel of a US made g10 spydie. its really something else compare to the common enduras and delicas.

Thanks guys, some great suggestions from everyone. The Manix 2 sounds tempting cause it is made in the USA but for now I'll probably stay within budget cause I'm expecting March to be an expnsive month for me, moreso than most months. Hate it when real life intrudes into my knife collecting hobby.

Is the Manix 2 a folder or a fixed blade? I love fixed blades but ATM I'm looking to get a folder of some sort.

Let me ask a follow-up question since I happen to own the Spyderco Bug. Is it at all representative of the quality one should expect from Spyderco, is it on the lower end of the scale or is it just a key-chain knife that really has little to do with full size Spyderco knives?

A Spyderco Bug would be on the extreme lower end of what you could expect from Spyderco. I didn't even know it existed until a few minutes ago.

Spyderco is known for making high quality, high performance knives. In the $60 or so range, I'd suggest an Endura/Delica, or a Tenacious (provided that you are right handed). If you can save an extra $10 I'd suggest the Manix 2 as well.

Take a look around the exchange forums here. Sometimes you can find good deals on knives.

Delica 4 FFG (ZDP 189) is a good start.
Razor sharp!!
Native Light Weight will be a good choice too

folder, one of the most popular designs, along with the paramilitary 2, delica, and endura

Thanks, seems like there is a growing consensus on the Manix 2 but it seems that there is also a consensus about the Native as well as for the Endura and Delica. Oh, tough decisions to be sure. I'm now fairly certain that I'm eventually going to end up with several offerings from Spyderco.

@Cynic, don't get me wrong, I think that the Bug is one of the finest keychain knives I've owned so that's why I asked how it compares. From the sound of things I'm really in for a treat with the better lines of Spyderco lines of knives.

If you want a "representative" Spyderco, I can't see how you could do better than the Delica in your size range. I believe it was the second model Sal came out with (after the Endura which is too big) and was my first Spyderco. There's nothing wrong with the Native, but the Delica is more of a classic. If you can, get your hands on them both and get the one that feels better to you. I seriously doubt you'lll be disappointed with either.

First Spyderco - wow, I'm almost jealous! You're really in for a treat!

Oh, you can pretty much count on that.
Just look upon this as the first step on your journey into spydieland, which most likely will be an enjoyable one.

Manix is an excellent knife, but you might not want to start off with a ball bearing lock as your first one. Some folks love the Manix, some not so much.

There is a reason the Endura and Delica have been around as long as they have.

But then I don't even own and Endura. Do have a sprint run Damascus Delica and I think the first Spydie I bought was was Delica, back when the clip and handle were one solid piece.

If you want something a tad different, take a look at the Stretch. One of Sal's favorites and a darn nice spydie.
At $80, its a tad over you limit.

No worries. I think highly enough of Spyderco to have dropped a couple of hundred dollars, already, on them this year. Try and save up a bit and pick up one of their higher-end models. They are definitely worth it.

Be careful carrying around the DC area though, knives are generally frowned upon.

I've got two Natives. One plain edge the other is serrated - both are great. I was given the serrated and edc'd it for about four years. It's semi-retired now but the plain edge is even better. I quite literally have no complaints about the Native. Pm me if you want my plain edge. I just got a Sage 1 and it's getting most of my attention.

I have to say I'm really quite excited about my first Spyderco knife also. Seems like they are the darling of most collectors and users of these knives.

I've traditionally collected older (old school) folders and fixed blade knives but ever since I got my first (New Generation) Ka-Bar and then a couple Kershaw's I decided that I can still collect more "classic" knives as well as modern knives of significance.

In regards to getting a Spyderco, the 1st of March can't get here soon enough for my liking now. LOL

Guess I'm quite excited about Spyderco now especially after reading multiple threads on this board. Really looking forward to this.

BTW, I posted the blade length in hopes that those knives would be in the price range I quoted but I have no problem getting a 4 inch folder. I just want something that I can use as an EDC (if I wanted to) without worrying about the legality of the knife in my pocket. Not that I would really anticipate too much trouble from Police since I don't go around getting in trouble.
