Ready To Purchase My First Real Spyderco. Which Should I Start Off With For Decent $$

its all gonna end with you getting a paramilitary anyway. save up for 1 more month and get that:)

I've got two Natives. One plain edge the other is serrated - both are great. I was given the serrated and edc'd it for about four years. It's semi-retired now but the plain edge is even better. I quite literally have no complaints about the Native. Pm me if you want my plain edge. I just got a Sage 1 and it's getting most of my attention.

Message sent. Though being fairly new to the forum I'm not sure if I emailed you or if I PM'd you. Hopefully it was the latter.

Not to worry, I'm sure that once I fall in love with Spyderco in general then that knife shall too end up being mine. Gotta go on a first date with Spyderco though before I can move up to marriage but your point is well taken.

I am really excited about this upcoming purchase of some sort. Kind of starting to feel like the proverbial kid in the candy store. :D

I bought me a Delica FFG a little over a week ago and just love it. It fits right in the price range that you are looking for. They have a bunch of colors to choose from. I wanted a gray one, but ended up getting a blue one. I will be buying a gray one because I am so impressed with the blade.

This is one of my first spydies that I have bought. I also bought a chaparral at the same time. You can tell a difference in the quality of the two, but you really do get the best bang for the buck with Spyderco. I would say to get the delica. I got the FFG version because I like a knife that is thin and slices really good. I don't think you will go wrong with any of them.

Here is a pic of mine

I am so impressed with the quality that I am going to be spending $450 the end of this week getting a few more spydies

I am planning on getting the sage 2, the manbug, the junior, the chinese folder, and i think the persistence.

Just curious but what is everyone's primary current Spyderco of great desire irrelevant of price? Not that I'm going to buy it straight away but I'm just curious.

Looking around the forums, I'd say that the current most popular model among Spydie lovers would be the Para 2 and the Manix 2. The large number of sprints and dealer exclusives will give you some idea just how popular they are. The historically popular choice is the Delica/Endura pair. Among the higher end models, the Military and the Stretch 2 are worth mentioning.

Among the Spyderco aficionados, the Superblue Caly3.5 is very well regarded. It requires a bit of care but it's a joy to use.

Of course anything in S90v and textured CF are very desirable from an investment/collecting perspective.

The Carbon Fiber M390 Military sprint run was recently released--I'd say that it is one of the most desirable Spyderco's right now. Time will tell if it will be as desirable as the CF S90V Military (which runs upwards of $450 on the secondary market).

I second (or third) the native. Great feeling knife and its a great bang for buck for the S30V steel you get.

if you really want to stay in your price range, i feel the delica is the best choice. lightweight, great steel, ffg, sweet choices for handle colors, grippy/comfy frn handle.

Delica 4. No matter what other Spyderco I add to my collection, I keep coming back to the humble Delica. Great knife!

I don't know what Enduras are going for these days, but I'm on my 3rd and will buy another when I inevitability lose the one I'm carrying now.

I only have one spyderco so take this for what it's worth. Get a manix 2. The ergonomics in hand are very nice for me, it has an excellent "grippy" feel to it and a nice blade that is a good size for all around use as a pocket knife. Excellent fit, finish and lock up. It sold me on spyderco quality. Save up the few extra bucks even if it means waiting for march.

Para 2 or Manix 2 would be my recommendations. I love the Manix 2. It's my favorite. But the Para 2 is probably the most recommended Spydie out there.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to form an informed opinion thanks to the great recommendations posted in this thread. I'll have to check again what my budget for March will be and then I'll see what I can get.

Just out of curiosity, although I'm not really a fan of the look of this knife, but what do you guys think of the Spyderco Byrd? ATM it's below my $60 price range and something I could pick up prior to March and still be able to pick up another Spydie next month without this expenditure influencing my decision.

Is the Byrd at all worth the $25 I'm seeing them for on eBay (sold as new) with factory warranty and all that? I really know very little about this knife and I still have to check the blade size on this model before I go and buy it if it's even worth buying. Any thoughts?

Edit: Specifically this is the knife I was curious about:

Just go with a regular Delica 4 with a plain edge for your first one, you'll find it for under your price point and it will serve you well for a long time and while your building your collection. Then before getting more knives, save up for a Sharpmaker.

I've been using several nice King water stones for quite some time, is the Sharpmaker really that good or even better?

I take it you don't think very highly of the Byrd Cara Cara 2 then?
