(51 days 'till archery season for deer!)

I had a Puma with a narrow 5" blade and rubber handle that I used for several years. I can't remember the model though. Couple of Shcrade fixed blades. Original Gerber Gator folding knife. Kershaw Vapor. Timberline Valloton folder. Various Mora's.

No specific knife for deer hunting. Kind of what ever I feel like taking with me at the time. I usually have a multi-tool, a folder, and a fixed blade.

Figured it out by going to knife center's site. It was the Puma polymer Trail Guide. Everyone on camp fought over that knife. I traded it for some knife I don't have anymore. DUMB. I didn't pay anything near that price though. Sometimes you have to thank god for evil bay.

I've dressed a lot of deer with everything from a small Case folder to a butcher knife. You can adapt to just about anything but the perfect blade is short enough that you can extend your index finger and cover the tip and narrow enough to easily ream around the anus cavity. The proper way to remove the guts is to cut all the way around the anus, pull it out a short way and tie it off. Then when opening the belly you place the tip of your index finger over the blade point so that you can seperate the intestines from the skin and not cut an intestine.

Question for you real deer hunters...I am not, but I am thinking of gifting my nephew, who is, a F-1.....is it considered a good one for dressing out a deer?
He mentioned it must have a good belly on it, and wondered if the F1 fit the bill....thanks!

i use an S1/WM-1 combo as my outdoorsy-hunting blades.

a H1 or a PHK would probably be a slightly better bet for a dedicated hunting knife than an F1.

I field dressed a few with a Spyderco Endura 50/50 edge.

The serated edge worked great cutting through the breast bone.

Forgot to mention...

This year, I am going to use my Randall model 28.

Like that, only mine has a nickel silver hilt.

I'm sure the 28 will be a great little knife in the field, but be sure to let me know your thoughts about it afterward anyway.

I have several.
Preference is something with a 3 to 4 inch drop point blade.

I've used a Browning folder and a Schrade Sharpfinger mostly but this year I'll be using my brand new Dozier K-16......can't wait!

Nice knife. Haven't seen a model 28 before. I need to check my latest catalog. I don't recall seeing that. Looks like a small version of the model 25.

I always liked the model 26 pathfinder. This looks even nicer.

IN reality, you can field dress deer with just about any knife. I know a guy that uses a Case trapper and he can clean a deer quicker than most people. That being said, I prefer a 3-4 inch dop point for such work

It's on page 14 of the 2010 catalog, if you've got that.

I've got the 13th and 34th printing. The 2010 Catalog must be the 35th. I believe the 35th also has the new White Ivorite material shown. Mine the 34th does not.

I'm going to have to send for a new catalog, although it is listed now on their web site.

Thanks Samael

The first deer has been a Buck Vanguard paired with a buck 110. After the first deer, I will definitely use something else to try, but the first has been the same ever since I first started hunting

Just call Val and ask her to stick one in the mail to you - she'll be happy to do it. (Too late today, though.)
