Real deer hunting knives

Sadly, i had my custom hunting knives (Steve Wheeler) stolen a couple of months back.Im now using a DH Russell Grohmann #4 in carbon and a Case shark tooth for ringing...they work fine

Bark River Drop Point Hunter. This year I field dressed a 5x5 Bull Elk with it. Great knife!!

For skinning, i used the drop point hunter, a Bark River Manitou, and a Buck Gen 5.

For field dressing and caping an Outdoor Edge "Swing Blaze" and for butchering a Benchmade "Onslaught" and a Ka-Bar "Warthog".
I just tried out my Swing Blaze on a doe this weekend. I was impressed. The gutting blade worked much better than a drop point or gut hook. Not the prettiest thing in the world but it gets the job done very well.

I killed a fat spikehorn with my T/C pistol this morning and ended up field dressing him with my Spyderco Native. I have a brand new Busse CABS and was dying to try it out. I also have a couple of other knives I was wanting to use on a whitetail this season, including a shiny new Randall Model 8. Sometimes I end up not wearing a sheath knife because I'm up in a tree stand or wearing a backpack or waders. Today I had waders on.

The Native is really perfect for the job. The S30V blade gets sharp and stays sharp and is thin but sturdy enough to easily cut up through the breastbone. The handle is plenty grippy for bloody hands. I've always thought it was one of the "best buys" in knives.

So far this season I've killed two, and both times, the Native was the knife I had with me.

Maybe it always ends up being in my pocket because I've come to trust it and rely on it....

Stay sharp,

For skinning and getting to the smaller parts a SAK Huntsman will do. The saw can be used to cut through the rib cage to get all the other stuff out.

I do not have any other pictures but my 550HG works well, Burger EXK1. Want to use my Benchmade Bone Collector and old slipjoint next and see how they do.

Thanks Jeff!

The barrel is a 14" 30/30 Win. I'm using the now-discontinued Hornady 130gr. Single Shot Pistol (SSP) bullet over Winchester 748 powder.

I have T/C stainless steel 30/30 barrels in 10" and 14" and both will shoot sub-MOA groups. I LOVE my Contender!

Stay sharp,

used my spyderco street beat on a 4 point whitetail this year, felt very good in the hand and the vg-10 held its edge through the deer easily.

Thanks Jeff!

Good choice Bob . Back in the early 80's ,I had a 14" 30 Herrett and it was a little light for deer. Those Contenders will shoot right where you aim them.
Thanks for sharing.

As of tonight, my Becker BK-11 is a real deer hunting knife. Point of fact, it's been really deer hunting for quite some time now but only recently has it been bloodied.

Gutted and ready for processing. With all that tallow on my blade, it's rustproof for the foreseeable future. :D

Question for you real deer hunters...I am not, but I am thinking of gifting my nephew, who is, a F-1.....is it considered a good one for dressing out a deer?
He mentioned it must have a good belly on it, and wondered if the F1 fit the bill....thanks!

The F-1 is an excellent choice... Very nice gift!

I've been using this Aitor for a long time. Don't remember how many years. It takes an extemely sharp edge and holds it. It would be hard to replace if I had too.
