Greetings All,

Sometimes it's the little things, the accessories, that really can make the difference. Here's my two main 'Go' rigs.

Main: NMSFNO in SpecOps with a fire steel, SAK, and multigadget. The multigadget, while not being super high quality, puts some pretty good little things into one compact unit--whistle, compass, thermometer, light, mirror and magnifying glass.

Secondary: When I want something a little more compact, but no less capable, my TankBuster in SpecOps with firesteel and Outdoor Edge Blaze Folder. The Outdoor edge is a really nice little folder for the $$--nice grip, good blade/profile made from AUS8 stainless.

There's obviously swapping that could be done between the two--SAK for Blaze Folder, etc.

In a fast occurring bad scenario where you didn't have lots of time to grab stuff or if you got separated from your main bag, either of these would be able to see you through for a little bit. Or if you were just doing a short outing/day hike and weren't planning on take much, again, either of these would work well. Yeah, I could probably cram some snare wire and a couple fishing hooks w/ line in there as well, but they're pretty well packed. I would probably stick a folded up map section if I were going into unfamiliar territory.

If I'm planning on being gone for more than an hour or two, these get teamed up with a versipak with some additional stuff--space blankets, metal cup, GPS, etc.

So what's in your pouch? (Safe queens need not apply).

The Spec Ops holds a Victorinox Farmer, BIC lighter, Fenix E01 flashlight, and paracord. The kydex rig is overkill, i know, but i've trained to carry the weight by having a 1911 or Glock 17 on my hip for the last 10 years. :D It holds all kinds of stuff including a Leatherman Wave, 25ft of paracord, flashlight, BIC, Aloksak, and an Altoids tin. The 511 is my wifes, it holds an Altoids tin, paracord, and an Aloksak.

Forgive the pretty knives, these pics were taking when i just got them. They arent virgins anymore.

After you have a knife and a ferro rod ... the next hardest thing to get by without is a pot to boil water in ...

You can be micheal angelo at carving pots ... but boiling water by adding stones from the fire to the pot is hard core "bollocks" in reality ... makes you appreciate the word "forever" ...

I have been looking at how some mountain marathon runners are using heavy foil as a folding pan ... seems fragile and probably is ... but developing a technique of whittling green branches to make a loop frame for a pot using tin foil as a cup to suspend over the fire ( the heavy stuff from disposable barbaque kits is supposed to be best ) to boil water in is going to be far better than most other things to put in a pouch. This and a good vetinarian animal condom to carry water in and some sterilising tablets would be my main items for the pouch after the ferro rod. Any room spare and a mini light would be next then a heliograph mirror and fishing hooks and line and a curved needle with a large eye.

You need to think through the hard things that cannot be made or learned.

Navigation ought to be something you can learn and carry in your head from your watch, the stars, trees and shadows ... whistles and cord you ought to be able to make ...

Boiling water in an altoids tin is another "bollocks" hard core thing to get by ... but it can be useful as a base for a foil cup to help take the weight of the water ...

A small nub of soap is a great thing to have when you need mild antiseptic or are breaking out in boils or if you have cuts on your fingers and your hands are your loo paper ... :D

The sheath set up on this Extrema Ratio rig seems pretty good...... just need to swap the knife out for a SAR6 maybe. Lost mountain Iron Works sheaths also seem pretty well set up but are scares these days.

My preferred Contents....... Lighter, whistle, torch, mirror, space blanket, fishing snare (doubles as animal snare) fire steel, duct tape, band aids, plastic bag, iodine tabs.

Great thread BTW.

I have some mixed feelings on that ER rig...part of me sorta likes it, part of me doesn't. I like the concept. I do like the bigger capacity pouch and that you could take considerably more stuff, but I'm not a huge fan of the idea of a bulk box bouncing/swinging around on your hip unless you use the leg strap, which I'm not too fond of. On the plus side, it looks like the knife has a ~ 6 1/2 blade, so maybe a TankBuster or other similar sized knife could be used. I wonder if there is a source for the sheath alone, or do you have to drop the pretty spendy coin for the whole package.

It sure would be nice if LMIW were still making sheaths. The SpecOps aren't bad, and a good deal for the price, but some more pouch space would be nice.

Keep 'er going.

Peter nailed it! My most recent kit has a ferro rod, some iodine tabs, a sailcloth needle, about 2 square feet of heavy duty tinfoil, and a tiny leather hone loaded with flexcut gold polishing compound. I know the hone is the bulkiest thing & probably the most singly use item, but it's for a full height convex edge. I'll probably not be in a situation with this particular knife where I'll need to resharpen on the fly, but it is the only thing in the kit I'd rather have & not need than vice versa. Having said that, a sabre grind is a better grind to have on a bug out blade. Which is why I prefer a B11 for a grab & go.

Here is a sequence from what is hailed to be a first class survival rig and knife......... IMO the sheath looks interesting but the knife looks ridiculous. I'm just saying....

Well, in going along with the "no safe queens" we should have at least one post with a scratched knife right ;) ?
Never go anywhere without a slip joint in my pocket. Lots of options, depends where I go and for how long.

The NMSFNO has been on a few short outings, the TB, if IIRC, has been out on one. They don't get used much at the moment (my woods time has been very limited in the past couple years--and when I do get a little time, I'm usually moving along), but the finish is relatively tough as well. There is a little wear, its just tough to see.

In the not too distant future, I'd really like to start doing some more extensive outings, which is part of the reason for this thread.

And I do agree on a secondary knife...I almost always have some type of folder clipped to a pocket.

Agree that the rig looks pretty decent, kind of like a decked out "dangler"

That's a knife? I thought it was from a Ron Popeil infomercial. Maybe you get two for 19.95?

And it's a Razr? Oh, i get it, it's the new tactical cellphone... yeah, that's the ticket.

Carried in a side pouch in my pack and designed to be thrown into pocket and go

Man here's a thread! Although I am currently carrying my NMSFNO in a large Spec Ops - loaded with my kit in the front pouch, I have several Chuddy Bear sheaths on the way for my Busse's so I'm hoping that all my "kit" fits in his pouches since leather is my preferred carry option...

Son of Exo titanium tube with specra cord on likewise Titanium spool, tinderquick(s), ferro rod segment (just enough to strike a fire - used a hacksaw to cut one of mine down, it was interesting!), Aquamir tabs for purifying water. All of this is in the Titanium tube. I also shove in some 550 cord like accessory cord and a storm whistle. It's a nice set up and carrys enough to get out of trouble if your outside overnight unexpectedly. I wouldn't go out and about without my Frost River Woordsman loaded up though..... Always carry my knife on my belt too, in case I get seperated from the rest of my gear, at least I don't lose my blade. An old Army 5th Group Dude told me that, and I've carried my knives that way since I was in the military.

Great thread. I'm looking to build a rig like these. Main knife is my original TG. Was wondering whether you guys would recommend the Emerson CQC-7 or the Zero Tolerance 0350 to be the little blade... thanks

Scrap Yard Regulator PSK:

Hard to see but a black contractor bag is folded in the back side of the factory nylon sheath and wrapped with black paracord.

You can't go wrong with either one IMO.

This is my new go rig.

I'm really likin' that rig! Who makes it & how much was it?!

+1 I like that a lot, although it lacks discretion. But once you have the AR and a glock in full open carry what does it matter? :)

My regular carrying in the woods and hiking kit.

TGLB in kydex with esee back and pouch, altoids tin with gerber mini multitool, small fire steel, small compass, antibiotic ointment, bandaids, signal mirror, fishing line and hooks and small sinker, tube with tylenol, 25ft of kevlar cord, small fenix light, and 3 or 4 water proof wind proof matches.

Here's my Go-bag... everything should be visible. 10 day supply of food, fire steel, 3 lighters, survival guide, string, para-cord, 3 different purpose knives, multitool, Head-Lamp flashlight, hand powered flashlight/radio, mess kit for cooking/boiling water, Water storage bag, waterproof storage for matches, lighters and fire steel, mylar blanket, signaling mirror, frog/fish spear head, and 80 foot of coiled wire.... best i can figure, this kit is sufficient to keep me alive in the woods (uncomfortably) indefinitely.
