I took the Grivory scales off of a brandy-new BK-9 getting ready for my next project, and this is what I found:

Really? Quality Control let something like this out the door as a first-quality product?
Granted, the defect (wayward grinder it would appear) is under the scales, but Beckers have removable scales!
Not only was someone there when it happened, it made it through the coating process without being rejected.

A little too much "A-a-a-ah, good enough!" going on here in my opinion (as a former U.S. manufacturer).

Doesn't affect the performance, and is hidden. Wouldn't bother me in the least bit.

while it wouldn't bother me.....I do agree thats a lil too obvious to be sneaking past QC!

Probably a Monday or Friday knife lol

Didn't you know your not suppose to take them apart??!! I agree with you, the higher price tag's of our knives is supposed
to give you a better product,fit,finnish..even if you can't see them... I.M.H.O.

God forbid someone would shit-can a blade blank...

No big deal. It isn't exposed, and isn't going to affect anything. Wouldn't bother me.

awwww it has a birthmark!! :P I can understand your frustration, but it's not compromising the blade functionality fortunately.

It's a non-issue, in my opinion. There are worse tooling scars on my Cessna and it cost 10,000x more than a BK9. As long as it doesn't affect performance and isn't visible while assembled, I couldn't care less.

I'm glad I looked at your link in your sig line before i posted. You obviously know what you're doing refinishing and customizing blades. I think they would have culled that blade if the grind marks ran over the edge and were visible when it was assembled but that's just me. I'd strip it, Dura-Coat just the tang on that side, then block sand it to the metal, using the Duracoat to fill the grinder marks, then proceed with your normal coating process. It might take 2 or 3 coats to fill it in but you could make it look a lot less noticeable with a little work.

Just my $0.02

Higher price tag's? Beckers? You kidding me? Best bang for the buck there is out there.

Looks like a government bar code so they can track your whereabouts. Watch out for the black helecopters!
Cheers

Remind me not to fly with you!

Price or not, I don't see anyone accepting this from an ESEE or even a KaBar, but somehow it's OK if it's "only" a Becker?

I dunno. It's probably just the scar from where they implanted the tracking chip.
If you're not happy with it, contact KA-BAR.

I had grinding marks all over the two Swamp Rats I stripped. Not as concentrated as that but still, it happens. If it bothers you send it back. Not sure what all the hubub is about.

I'm guessing you never took a close look at those Lycoming castings. Peek under the skin and you'll find all kinds of "character" underneath. Same goes for the P&W's on my C-425. Nevermind the Allisons in the 130's I flew for 30+ years...

Cool to see you had a 177. Cardinals aren't too common around here.

Well, OK. Looks like I'm in the minority on this one.

Carry on.

Nope you're right. They let something slip through that shouldn't. Kabar isn't perfect, believe me. I probably wouldn't raise hell or anything over it, but you are right, that's a non intended, planned or designed flaw. That being said, I would look at it as a lil birthmark.

Somebody did see that when it was manufactured tho, and you're probably right. They went "oh they won't see that. Goo enough" and tossed it in the good pile. Kershaw would sell that as a factory second.
