Really flat

I love it! :D That goes back to personal preference, and it just makes me want to see your knives! I don't think in any craft there's such a thing as "too picky." Only better and better work. For my money, you're on the right track all the way.


Thanks I appreciate the encouragement. Most of the guys selling lapping plates thought I was nuts for wanting something that flat.

I will also try the figure 8 motion.

I tried calling a couple places with lapping plates. I had a couple of questions for them and when they found out what I was doing they told me I was going overboard and actually refered me to other companies. I did talk to one guy who told me anything below 220 grit is considered "grinding" not "lapping" and that if I ordered a plate to expect the plate to lose it's flatness quickly. I have tried the push only method on sandpaper and seemed to show better results. I think I'm going to continue with the sandpaper until 220 on the granite block I have. I'm going to order the lapping plates and go with 220 grit and up from there.
I really appreciate the help. I'll update this when I get a chance to mess with a lapping plate.
