Really wanting a Strider SNG....Help!

Hi OP,

Buy it only after you've answered, "No," to these two questions:

1. Do you expect it to be better at cutting things than your current folder?
Most people who are disappointed after buying a high-end folder are really just disillusioned; they thought the knife was going to change their lives. It won't; it's just a knife, and it actually won't do anything that your $100 Spyderco--or hell, your $20 Buck--can't do. But if you have handled enough knives that you truly can appreciate the fit, finish and quality of a high-end folder, then by all means go ahead. Most of us can't truly appreciate the quality difference. I know I can't, which is why I don't have one.

2. Is $500 a serious, serious amount of money to you?
I don't mean, "do you have the money in your bank right at this moment?" Most people, even poor people, will eventually have $500 in their bank account on payday. I mean... can you actually afford it? If you can't, then don't buy it. IMHO, there are too many threads on BF and other knife forums involving some guy who went broke and then promptly wants to sell off his collection of expensive knives (at huge losses, usually)... WTF? Why are people that close to the brink buying high-end knives in the first place? Don't be that guy. There are too many of those guys on these forums already.

Answered, "No," to both? Pull the trigger and enjoy the knife.

I got rid of my Umnumzaan after getting an SnG. The umnumzaan is a nice letter opener in comparison.

Having both and using both, I call shenanigans on this statement.
They've both been used for:
-cutting fiberglass
-cutting 1/4" thick leather
-cutting cardboard
-cutting wood in the woods (making spears, sausage skewers, cutting rope, etc.)
-and yes, opening letters (well, bills mostly;)).

Why do I still have both? Because both are good, that's why.

Because you could be dead before things get on track.
My parents used to obsess about not having enough saved for retirement...then my mom died at age 48.
All of a sudden my dad was glad they'd actually done some things while she was alive.

Life is short---buy more knives.:)

The Strider has better heat treat and doesn't become a pita to close when it starts getting dirty. Edge retention is better on the Strider due to the Bos heat treat.

Letter opener because CR will deny your warranty for flicking, etc. If he even thinks you did something wrong you are left with a paperweight

The Strider does seem to hold an edge slightly longer, but not enough to make much diiference. The Umnumzaan is slightly easier to sharpen...it all balances out.
As I tighten my pivots to avoid flickability (I live in Canada, where flickiness is a no-no), the anti-flicking thing doesn't concern me. I enjoyed flicking knives a bit when younger, but after wearing out knives doing so--knives which often had no warranty at all--I just kind of stopped.
As long as the knife is designed for proper one-hand opening, I don't find much speed advantage in flicking anyway.:)

But hey, you have to decide what you want in a knife (or anything else) then spend accordingly.

Yep. It's a great knife. They don't lead the value parade, but if it's over-priced and I buy one, there is only one person whose @$$ needs a kick, and it ain't Mick Strider. ;)

Just buy it.
Is it worth it? It's likely overpriced.

But it made me $500 worth of happy, judging by how happy I was with other $500 expenditures.
And you have something left afterwards at the end of the weekend.;):D

I flick my sebbie and umnum all day long. Just more mis-information being spreaded. Theres a difference between 'thumb flick' which is fine and snapping your wrist which causes the blade to come flying out at full speed. That is not good for any folder even a Strider.

Exactly!!! Life is not a race to see how much money you have saved up when you die. Life is meant to be lived. I feel that people are far too obsessed with accomplishments and accolades, and not obsessed enough with actually living and doing the things that make them happy.

You won't be on your death bed smiling because you met that deadline, or you retired with XXXX amount of money saved up. You will smile remembering all of the fun things you did, the experiences you shared with people, and the enjoyment you had with your hobbies.

That's just me though, to each their own. I will enjoy my life first and foremost, and worry about everything else with the rest of my time.

Yes get it! I started with a Chris Reeves Umnumzaan, but wanted something stronger. So I got a SNG, but still wanted something stronger, so I got an SMF. Now I have the SNG in my pocket and the SMF in my bag. My Umnumzaan sits in a drawer waiting for me to sell it :)

Enough posting already, go out and buy one, throw the baggie away, and find something that needs cutting. ;)

So Striders are still BOS heat treated? And + 1 on Charlie's post just above ;)

can't agree with you more in this statement.

i have money saved. i have a steady job and a nice house. i could save more but i would rather live a happy fulfilled life than die with regrets. I'm not saying i buy 1 more knife to complete me. but like you said "life is too short, buy more knives"

You obviously can't read or have a reading comprehension problem. I have stated only fact. Documented fact at that.
Read prior posts and links before you make a baseless accusation.

I'm done with that line of conversation.

As for the S35VN I have no clue. I know there 110V is pretty awesome according to several that have tested it. They also do not charge a premium for the super steels. You can do whatever you want with the knife short of pimping it or reassembling it incorrectly and they will fix it if it breaks. No questions asked. You are paying for the warranty also.

As a comparison, Snap-On tools are lifetime warrantied like that. You pay a real premium for stuff like snap ring pliers because they break often. I have some that have been replaced several times.
