Reason for discontinuing knives?

It's not my place here to answer questions, even if knew the answers. I would just like to say its' really nice to see that my designs where a hit and still appreciated after a few years. Thanks for the mentions guys, it means a lot.

Hi Neil, I appreciate your coming on the Forum. Your terrific designs speak for themselves. If one can even find a Skirmish or Rukus in any flavor it's a very good day. Many Kudos sent your way Sir.

As other's have noted, I am also very appreciative of your designs. I was lucky enough to have been passed down a Skirmish from my dad a few years ago. Awesome knife in every respect - not to mention the Rukus as well. There was a sense of a custom touch in those models that made them very special to me.

Worth a fortune now, seek out the early three hole variants of the Skirmish my friends. And for the notes: If you find anything with the Blackwood logo it's the earlier version; unmarked it's the later...same knife otherwise...!

Neil,

You deserve the mention. Your designs are some of the best ever made. I'd just like to take this opportunity to say, thank you!

Your designs are some of the most highly sought after BMs. I'm glad to say I managed to find a Rukus, now i just need to find a skirmish for a price I can afford:rolleyes:

Neil,
Your designs mean a lot to us!!!
The 610 right here in my pocket speaks for it self.
We have these knives, but we want them back so more people can enjoy them too.
Thanks, Neil

When I first started this thread my hope was that Benchmade might chime in and give us some insight.

I realize from all the great responses so far there could be any number of reasons and considerations for discontinuing a given knife, all different and unique to that particular model so I see a simple answer really isn't possible or realistic to expect..

I would still hope however, that Benchmade might chime in anyway and maybe let us know if there's any possibility at all, of seeing a return of any of the older discontinued models?

You know, just to give us some hope, even if ever so slight?

Thanks Prof and everyone for he kind words. I still have that polymer prototype right here in my desk drawer. I was certainly impressed by it as well!!

I do not speak for Benchmade and do not know the specific reasons for their policies.
However, the intersection of two business truisms helps explain why it would work. Consider that 80% of your sales typically come from 20% of your customers. This could be a lot higher ratio in the knife collecting category.
Further, for an innovative company, which Benchmade certainly is, most of your sales will come from a similarly small percentage of your NEWEST products. Also the concept of scarcity can be a powerful driver in itself.
