Reasonable candidates for a Bear Grylls-ish knife...

Yeah, I know - he isn't the best candidate for 'Survivor of the year', probably Les Stroud would be better. I really liked that Bayley knife Grylls had recently - just not the 350 # price (~$730 US). So, I've been looking for a similar replacement - for woods walking/stomping/hiking, camping, and basement/backyard survival.

I have carried everything from my Dad's old WWII KaBar to a Western #66 Hunter to a Buck 110 when I hiked/camped. That smaller knife looked appealing. I thought, how about my Buck 102? It's fun to whittle with. Then I did some literature searching - and came up with an odd pair. How about a Benchmade Activator+ BM201 (3.6" x .140" D2) - or a Bark River Huntsman (3.25" x .187" A2) in green or black Micarta? Any suggestions - or comments/experiences/preferences on my two choices? Thanks!

Alright! Hollowdweller turned me on to a knife called the Bravo-1 by BRKT looks to fit the bill as to what your intended goal is. While I don't have one (I will soon!) by the look of them they are stout well-built knives.

Good Luck!

There are several knves from Helle, and others at Ragweed Forge that would fit the bill.

If you want a knife that is closer to the Bayley knife take a look a Daniel Koster's "Bushcraft Knife". Dan is a supporter of BF, and one hell of a knife maker.

For less than a 1/3rd of the price you can get a first rate knife. Will have a wait time however.

Eddited to add:

IMO the Bayley "Raven Series" knife is a very functional looking knife made with good materials. Too bad all the hype, and being made in the UK have the price in the stratosphere for US buyers.

I would have to suggest Bark River for their convex edge -easy to sharpen in field and all around toughness. They have several models that would be a sub for the Grylls knife. The Bravo 1 is the beefiest of these. The Northstar is in the 3"-4" inch range, the Nebula and Aurora somewhat larger. The Fox River and Canadian Special are also excellent general purpose outdoor knives. Although I have not handled the Huntsman, I'm sure it would perform well. Almost too many to choose from, so take your pick! You won't regret the decision.

The F1, bein' SS, sounds appropriate SINCE HE UNNECESSARILY JUMPS INTO (ICE-COLD) WATER EVERY DAYUM CHANCE HE GETS!

And you'd need a laynard hole for attachment for when he is up in trees or running outta' control down rocky hillsides.

Hollow handle to hold pills for when he drinks water outta' . . . . you know.:barf:

Has to be sheeple friendly since he spends the nights in hotels when off "surviving" in the "wilds." Bell hop might see it and freek.

Bark River Bravo-1, Fallkniven A1 or a custom like Koster Knives bushcraft knife. Have the first two and the third is on order and will ship in the near future. :D

I just noticed the Raven Series from Bayley Knife. At $430 for the largest version, thats a bit more reasonable pricing then $750 for the Bear Grylls version.

Any reasonable human being would have something on the order of an F1. In BG's case, I would take a nice piece of leather, put an American Express card on it, fold it over, and put a rivet in the corner so it swivels nicely. Trim to suit and market as the Bear Grylls Folding Survival Tool--- don't leave home without it! If you're too weenie to spend a night in the woods, use it to take a chopper to the nearest hotel. :D

Makes sense to me...you can go into any Dick's Sporting Goods, and purchase any "Survival Gear" you might need, and you can stock up on nutrients at Starbucks on your way out...:barf::rolleyes:

Ah, I've got me one of those...

This practical swivel made model was designed in collaboration with Bear Grylls for the 'Man vs. Wild' and 'Born survivor Bear Grylls' TV series. This is 'Bears tool of choice', and as you would expect, it is made to last thanks to a strong full riveted swivel assembly method featuring a unique one piece card.

The design criteria demanded a tool that was not too large, remaining light and slim enough to be carried unobtrusively without getting in the way, yet still perform when required.

Check out the the injection-molded card made from ABS for serious use. It comes with Bear's action sheath featuring horizontal carry with extra card detainment, or on request a traditional full leather wallet-type sheath can be supplied.

(With apologies to Bayley Knife. Hopefully some sort of trademark exemption for parody exists in the UK.)

(Sorry, I read that and just had to Photoshop one :D)
