Reasons to not carry a multitool

Reasons not to carry a multitool: 1) I'm in the shower...don't worry, multitools are nearby on the floor with my blue jeans), 2) I'm in bed, asleep...MT on the nightstand, 3) I rarely carry A multitool...I usually carry at least two...remember that thing about one to hold the nut and one to turn the screw? FYI, I actually can't remember every needing a multitool while I was on the shower. Hard to believe, isn't it? T-A
I used a multitool in the shower to tighten the screw in the faucet handle. Not while taking a shower, though.

What are some reasons you stopped carrying a multitool and what are some reasons you still do?

I don't like to carry more than one folder. Once I started using larger folders (often plus a fixed blade), the multitool retired. The one thing I miss sometimes is the cork screw.

There is always a SAK on my desk though. No need in the car or on the bike (or in proximity), as I have real tools.

I get a panic attack when I don't have a multitool on my person. Some guys are that way about their watch or gun or whatever, but a pliers based multitool is the absolutely first thing I strap to my belt in the morning. I use it at least 4 times a day.

I’ve broken the pliers on 3 leathermans from prying. Leatherman has repaired them all. However, I don’t do that no more.

Anyways I pocket carry a leatherman original PST daily. I use it about daily too. From the bottle opener for glass bottle cokes, to the pliers for ticks on the dog or kid, to the awl and the knife.

Now I always have other knives. So you might ask what I do with a leatherman knife that the other won’t handle.

Well cutting a radiator hose off a water pump is a good example of something I ain’t going to use my good knife for, but that the leatherman handled without a hiccup.

The knives change for a day or two but always go back. The gun has occasionally changed but has been the same a year now. But the leatherman has been ten years. This same leatherman about 4. I have a spare in case something “happens”.

I kept breaking them. I may be rough with them but the dedicated screwdrivers, pliers, knife, etc last considerably longer in the same or worse conditions. I think there is too much compromise in trying to jamb a dozen tools into a small package. the steel used is not up to the task when thinned down to fit. I've broken or lost 3 Leatherman waves, 2 super tools, 1 crunch, 2 micros. and sent most of those tools in more then once for repairs. the cost was just not worth it anymore

does a 6 in 1 screwdriver count as a "multi" tool? I still cary one every day. going to add a Knipex Cobra XS Water Pump Pliers to my EDC as soon as it arrives. My belt knife, the 6in1 screwdriver that the Knipex will do probably 90% of my previous Leatherman Wave with several times the durability and about half the cost. only real downside is weight and size but it doesn't bother me as my job has me carrying tools around all day anyways
Me too, I stopped carrying Plier multitools and just carry SAK and a pair of pliers. Most of what I need and my pants stay up better.

Been carrying a Leatherman Micra--along with a knife--for the past few years . . . though I am thinking of getting a Gerber Dime for the albeit almost-useless pliers. I just don't like a lot of hardware weighing me down, especially for the summer.
Go with a Letterman squirt if you do decide to buy.
The little Chinese gerbers are worthless garbage in my experience.
I had one of their mini multitools break on me trying to cut a paperclip, so I exchanged it at the store and the 2nd one broke too.
Both pliers broke and the philips driver on one broke just trying to tighten a doorknob screw, not a lot of torque.

The leatherman squirt is much higher quality.

THIS!

I've been carrying a squirt for a bit over 7 years now, and wouldn't trade it for anything. Small enough to carry without being a PITA, but enough to fix a motor scooter, lawn mower, door hinge, hook out of a fish's mouth, and uncounted other sudden little jobs where a small pliers was needed. Can't count how many cold brewskis were opened after a job.

Leatherman squirt is a mighty piece of gear.

Sebertool M4
The M3 is the best one but they don't go up for sale very often. I've given up on getting one.
If I still had mine I'd send it to you, but I gave it to my buddy a couple years ago.

I finally got one. After all this time. It's in perfect condition too. It looks sooooooo good. That's the problem...

I feel like a kid who just got hold of some rare limited edition action figure, and all I want to do is take it out of the box to play with it, but I can't because it's too valuable.

😣

How much did it set you back ?
And did you buy it as a monetary investment or a user ?
Every one of the Sebertools I bought were all NOS except my M4 which was just barely used, and I had no problem using and even modifying any of them.

Theres a used one available on Ebay right now for $40 or best offer.
It looks like mostly the finish is just pretty worn, it's not a durable paint finish at all and wears easily.
Just search Sebertool multitool since it doesn't say M3 on it, you should be able to score it for a reasonable price.

Way less than what you'd expect.

It's hard to explain. I bought it because I am a fan of what it is. A large part of that involves its functionality.

I just like it. It has value to me that's not easy to quantify.

These are no longer being made. As time goes on, opportunity dwindles and cost increases. Ten years ago I would have no problems accumulating and using these. This one is also in mint condition. Flawless. Perfect.

These days I try to avoid ebay as much as possible. Too many jerks and scumbags. Besides, I'm not willing to pay 40 bucks + shipping for one that's worn out as badly as that one. It's already way more than I paid for the one I just got.

I appreciated the idea of the Sebertech multitools, but knew that for me this just wasn't good enough and I had to actually experience them.

My initial thought was that the m3 had to be better than the m2 and was likely the best of the 4 offerings. Then I used them all, found the m3 wasn't necessarily better, and that the m4 is my favorite when push comes to shove.

The I2 seberknife could be a passable alternative to the Vic classic, but they're pretty rare and I've never had one.
