Reasons to prefer Emerson Knives

Right now, my EDC is an A-100 and as Rolf knows, it has always been one of my favorite knives. Why? Emerson knives in general are brilliant designs from the standpoint of strength, utility and feel. Once you pick up an Emerson, it feels at home in your hand and you immediately know that you are using a knife that is designed to be used. I know that such feeling is very subjective, which is why I urge people to handle an Emerson knife.

Originally, Emerson knives were purpose built for the military and this heritage shows through in every Emerson knife to this day. Emerson knives are built like tanks, to withstand hard use in the field. Some have suggested that 154CM is a 'dated' steel, yet it is tough, corrosion resistant and perfected by the Emerson heat treating. I don't fret over having to sharpen my Emersons. They hone back to a razor sharpness with ease on standard stones.

I'll grant that Emerson knives are not for everyone, but for those situations where you simply can't afford to have your knife fail, Emerson has your back.

I dont like all the talk how 154cm is not good steel. I mentioned before about using a knife as a tool. Every tool has a purpose. 154cm can be outmatched by super steels in wear resistance but these super steels with 60+ hardness would chip like icicles compared to 154cm under a lot of circumstances.

Agreed. There was a point and time when VG-10 was the "cat's ass" (it still is, IMHO). I used to go down these rabbit holes of wanting to the latest and greatest, but what I found was that I had a tendency to work them less as I wasn't sure if I was able to maintain them and bring them back with the same level and ease of a VG-10, 154CM, CPM154, 1095, N690, or CTS-XHP. I think the best steel is the one you can easily care for, maintain, and bring back to its full potential.

I know many will knock the chisel grind for not cutting, effortlessly, in a straight line. Totally fair. If that is a requirement, perhaps the chisel grind is not the "right" option for you.

I like Emersons because:
- the chisel grind (coupled with 154CM) is easy to maintain
- majority of what I expose a knife to is breaking down cardboard, rope, ties, twine, plastic, etc. (I am not using a knife to showcase my "bladework")
- I love the longer, fuller handles as it provides me a very sound and positive grip

My reasons.

#1 Ernest Emerson
#2 Design and Feel
#3 Blade Steel
#4 Real World proven abilities
#5 Customer Service
#6 No cheap chinese parts
#7 Easy maintenance

I mean..... I could pretty much go on all day, you get idea.

There's plenty of companies I like and (and dislike) but Emerson's are my go-to.

Good stuff.^
The other day, I handed my CQC7 to a fellow who never held an Emerson, and the first thing he said to his friend was, feel this!

I own more Emerson knives than anything else, my logic is if Navy SEALs asked that man to make them knives then it will be plenty sufficient for what I will use it for. I have recently branched out to ZT for their lineup of Emerson designed knives. In fact my 0620cf has now taken the role of one of two knives I EDC and trust me when I say it only has one purpose and it ain't for opening boxes.

I just picked up two of the ZT/Emerson collaborations and WOW. I got the ZT0620CF (in CTS-204P) and a sprint run ZT0630CFM390 in M390.

A Roadhouse and CQC-8 complete with Wave in a "super steel" and titanium framelock with carbon fiber and ZT build quality? HELL YES. I prefer the "super" version of Emersons as I like to carry 4" + (I carry knives as secondary SD weapons) so my only knock is that these are the size of the regular versions and the handle ergos aren't as good as an Emerson. I consider the 0620CF a steal at 189.

For people complaining about ZT being too "art knife" and not enough "hard use" look at these two models--a great fusion of ZT and Emerson.

I love all the ZT Emerson designs and I've owned all of them multiply times and I also love the Emerson ProTecH Autos.......

but

I always end up selling them because IMO nothing comes close to a real deal CQC-7 or even better yet, the HD-7 (which has been my main EDC for a year now)

Having said that, if you REALLLLYYY need a frame lock over a liner lock and can't find a HD-7 or ID....etc etc, then the ZT is the next best thing.

My main reasons for liking Emersons and always making a full circle back to them .
1) Simplicity
2) Ease of Sharpening the chisel grind
3) Feel in hand is amazing
4) Looks
5) Cuts like a laser

Damn I need an Emerson Framelock too.

Here is another reason. If you are a straight pro like me you can use the part of the thumb ramp that sticks out the front of the scales when the knife is closed as a front flipper on some ofnthe Emerson knives. Incan do it with my CQC7s and abit of wrist action.

The new karambit looks like a monster, but no can do @600$ right now. Their email news letter is a tease. Don't subscribe to it lest maxed out credit cards.

Well let's just say I've owned my share of amazing blade's and nothing in my opinion beats the pure simplicity of a great Emerson blade. I can honestly say zt's are hype, Spyderco's god awful blade shapes IMO. Ernest isn't trying to impress anyone, he makes knives that he expects to be used hard period!

The Horseman is my go to user
