I just joined this forum. The purpose of my joining was to post a thread about my custom order. Because I found this thread, I decided to add to it instead of starting a new one.
In January of 1998, I ordered a custom Viper. The price then was $400. I sent a $50 deposit. My invoice is #1325 and it is dated January 25, 1998. I was told then the wait would be two years. My order is now almost 8 ½ years old.
Every two years or so, I would call or email Emerson Knives. Each time, I was told the wait would be an additional two or three years. At the end of 2005, Emerson stopped responding to my emails, though I sent a few. A few months ago, I sent a certified letter with a return receipt. In the letter, I asked that Mr. Emerson call or email me with an update. Though I got the return receipt back in a few days (I live less than 20 miles from the factory), I never received an email or a call. I called a month later. The woman who answered the phone had no idea when the order would be done.
Several years ago, I met Mr. Emerson at a knife show in Southern California (I dont recall if this was before or after I placed my order). I was extremely impressed with him. He is a very, very nice person and a true gentleman.
It seems to be the basic reason that the custom orders are taking so long is because Mr. Emerson keeps taking on more and more projects, which takes away from his time to make the custom knives. As polite as I am trying to be in this message, I must say that I dont think this is fair to his customers who have been waiting so long for their custom orders. It is a simple business decision Mr. Emerson makes not to focus on the custom knives and take on other projects. No one forces him to do this; if he chooses, he can stop making everything else and just make his custom knives. There really is no justification for a customer being told that his custom knife will take 2 years and then it ends up taking 10.
I have another theory why the custom orders are taking so long: I am quite certain that everyone including Mr. Emerson is aware that anyone can immediately turn around and sell the knife for about 3 times what he paid. I have heard that Mr. Emerson will honor the original price.
I plan to keep waiting for my order. I dont have any plans to ask for my deposit back. Has anyone thought about how much money Emerson has made on just the interest of all these deposits? It would be interesting if a lot of people started asking for their money back, including interest.
