Received Invoice

A few days ago, I received an email signed Ernest Emerson. This was in response to my inquiry as to the status fo my CQC6 order, from Aug. 95. Invoice mid 500's. I was concerned because I had read a post or two regarding custom delivery on a 6 with later No. invoices. Emerson said that he made the customs in order, strictly according to invoice No. He asked if I had the invoice No. or name of the person{s} who had received their knives with invoices newer than mine. I couldn't find the posts. If someone here has actually taken delivery of a cqc6 recently direct from Emerson it would be helpful if he would at least give his invoice No. and the date of delivery. Emerson seemed interested in finding out and said he would get my knife out as soon as possible. I'll post when I take delivery. Eric Bland is pen name. J.S.

Eric Bland,

It's nice to hear that Emerson is replying to emails. He apparently has been delivering knives out of order, I remember reading the same posts. Regarding obtaining your knife "as soon as possible"...it's always an ambiguous issue. Emerson seems to means well, but I have heard that on a number of occasions, he has promised delivery on certain orders (some cases more than once) but they have yet to be fulfilled.

He has thousands of orders...the man is busy. I wouldn't bet on getting your knife in a while. Check out some old posts containing Les's insights into this matter if you already have not.

I have a knife on order as well. Who knows if I will ever see it.

There's an interesting thread over in the Custom Knives forum about this topic. I was pleased to see Derek enter into the discussion, because it indicated the company was involved. But no answers to the basic question posed here and there: How are orders filled, and when will knives get delivered? It's disappointing that no answer is forthcoming.

Just found this post, and am happy to say, my CQC6 I speak of in the first thread was delivered to me yesterday, WOW, what a wait!! Still waiting on the 8.

I just joined this forum. The purpose of my joining was to post a thread about my custom order. Because I found this thread, I decided to add to it instead of starting a new one.

In January of 1998, I ordered a custom Viper. The price then was $400. I sent a $50 deposit. My invoice is #1325 and it is dated January 25, 1998. I was told then the wait would be two years. My order is now almost 8 ½ years old.

Every two years or so, I would call or email Emerson Knives. Each time, I was told the wait would be an additional two or three years. At the end of 2005, Emerson stopped responding to my emails, though I sent a few. A few months ago, I sent a certified letter with a return receipt. In the letter, I asked that Mr. Emerson call or email me with an update. Though I got the return receipt back in a few days (I live less than 20 miles from the factory), I never received an email or a call. I called a month later. The woman who answered the phone had no idea when the order would be done.

Several years ago, I met Mr. Emerson at a knife show in Southern California (I don’t recall if this was before or after I placed my order). I was extremely impressed with him. He is a very, very nice person and a true gentleman.

It seems to be the basic reason that the custom orders are taking so long is because Mr. Emerson keeps taking on more and more projects, which takes away from his time to make the custom knives. As polite as I am trying to be in this message, I must say that I don’t think this is fair to his customers who have been waiting so long for their custom orders. It is a simple business decision Mr. Emerson makes not to focus on the custom knives and take on other projects. No one forces him to do this; if he chooses, he can stop making everything else and just make his custom knives. There really is no justification for a customer being told that his custom knife will take 2 years and then it ends up taking 10.

I have another theory why the custom orders are taking so long: I am quite certain that everyone including Mr. Emerson is aware that anyone can immediately turn around and sell the knife for about 3 times what he paid. I have heard that Mr. Emerson will honor the original price.

I plan to keep waiting for my order. I don’t have any plans to ask for my deposit back. Has anyone thought about how much money Emerson has made on just the interest of all these deposits? It would be interesting if a lot of people started asking for their money back, including interest.

I can say that when I ordered my knife in '99, no deposite was required.

if ya are tired of fooling with it i'll give ya your $50 back + interest and i get your place in line for the viper, interested?

I definitely plan to keep waiting. Plus, the thing about interest is just hypothetical. I was more just venting my frustrations.

Holly Crap! That is one long wait! I never knew Emerson had such a list for his custom knives.

thats why ya see CQC8's on ebay for $1000+ and CQC6's for $1500 and up, up up.

i bought my ZBG '8 from a bud who won the lottery at a vegas knife show and was allowed to buy it for ~$600, i paid him $750 and considered it a deal. i have carried it 2 yrs now & i bet i could put it on ebay & get $1200 or so, a few yrs ago '8s just werent going for what '6s were, imho anything that says "specwar knives" on it is worth some $$$, one of my buds didnt think my CQC6 was worth as much as his stainless colt gold cup, after looking on ebay he was stunned, IIRC a '6 had went for ~$1600 IIRC, he couldnt understand why this was.

point being there is a tremendous demand for ernies custom stuff, its getting to the point were i almost hate to carry mine as great as they are, i got on the list right before he quit taking names in about '99 or maybe '00, who knows when i'll get anything lol.

I wish he would not sell any customs at shows, even if he is just selling one through some type of lottery system. It is just not fair to those who have been waiting a long time.

a lot of folks just turn around and sell them for 2X the $$, as far as being fair, ya have a point imho.

I probably will turn around and sell mine for 3x what I paid, whenever I receive it. I just don't have the same interest in knives as I did 8 years ago. Plus, it is hard to get excited about something I have had to wait this long for, given the unexplained and unjustified multiple delays. The only excitement about it is making a quick profit. I figure if I've had to wait that long at least that is something I can enjoy out of it. But let's see when I actually get it. Emerson created this mess.
