I'm looking for a new backpack. Here are my requirements.

1. NO LARGER than a normal "school backpack" preferably smaller.

2. Plenty of pockets outside or in to fit a digital camera, Compaq PDA, umbrella, and other ditritus crap.

3. 2 large main compartements. 1 for a change of clothes the other for other gear.

4. Comfortable to wear on extended hikes/climbs

5. Top quality, I'd rather cry over the expense than to cry over a failure when really needed.

6.Balistic nylon is preferable and water resistance is of utmost importance.

7. Is Blackhawk gear of high quality?

8. a built in hydration system would be killer

A lot folks swear by Blackhawk gear but, I find Eagle Industries to offer better products for my needs at the same or a lesser pricepoint. I am very happy with my Eagle Industries gear and will buy more.

London Bridge Trading is another that people don't speak of often but, offer Top Notch "speciality" gear.

http://www.eagleindustries.com/mainprod.asp?scv=0RECON HYDRO PACK - 3 POCKET (RHP-3P) is a likely candidate to meet your needs.

I have also had good results using LOWE gear. While I haven't personally used DANA Designs, it is highly recommended by many for good reasons.

kh21106,
It's only slightly obvious that I'm the guy whos forum name used to be TTO simply by the fact that my full name is in my signature. What's your point?

kh21106,
I have no idea who this guy you are giving a hard time is, but he asked a resonable question - why are you two hassling each other?

I have a Eagle RHP-3P in black and I'm very happy with it. Got it from Brad at www.lightfighter.com I would also recommend Gregory packs, but you cant go wrong with anything from Eagle Industries.

Well,

I have nothing bad to say about any of the 3 makers, Blackhawk, Eagle or LBT. All are great quality, but I find Blackhawk to be the most affordable (20% off retail HERE and here) and built bomb proof - I was buying so much for work that the wife went into business as a dealer....but that's another story :D

Some packs I think may fit your criteria are...

The X1 Raptor Pack
983.jpg

Some newer Blackhawk bags that also include Hydrastorm hydration systems are....

Charles,
Recoil is a troll. He goes by many different names here and on other forums. Actually, troll is a pretty nice name for him.

Good. Now that we know who he is, where do we go from there? He asked a legit question, and asked very nicely. He got several good answers. Why pollute an otherwise valuable thread with his history? If you think he should be banned, contact Spark or a moderator, but don't reignite flame wars on the forum itself, please. That's trolling, too.

Esav, the last thing i desire is a 'flame war'. I don't have the time or patients for it. However, there are some people here who don't know who this guy is with all his various names. If you wish to call me a troll for pointing him out then so be it. The only good thing i can see coming from this post and question is someone else might be seriously looking for a backpack and Java (and others) will not have wasted his time.---Kevin

Yep, I posted a link to my favorite manufacturer, but that X1 Raptor pack looks like something I want to check into. The outer pockets and fastex buckles are big pluses for me.
I truly envy anyone whose life is so problem-free that the poster's identity is such a big deal.
Thread's about backpacks. Let's talk about backpacks....

Dan, are the double pouches on the left side of the Raptor the same size as triple mag pouches? Any provision-like the Cyclone-for carrying gear under the pack?
Right now, I want something smaller than my current packs for use as a daypack that can double for short hikes and overnighters. Looks like you could do something with the straps at the top, but I'd rather strap a bivy and pad to the bottom, where they wouldn't interfere with getting into the bag.
Thanks.

Blackhawk lists them as "pop flare" pouches but they are a good bit larger than standard flare pouches. I have 2 of the same kind of pouches on one side of my X-3,

3 (5.56 30 round)mags fit real nice into them. 4 can be forced in but it's real tight.

There are straps for gear attachment underneath. They are really long, and people ask me why a lot. They also serve as a drop line during airborne operations. They do have a little velcro storage area underneath so you can stow the extra webbing until your next jump :)

OK - big group hug :D Keep up the good posts :)

Also, there is a company called Snugpak that makes a couple different good looking packs. I have no idea what the construction is like, but their other products (Merlin and Softie sleeping bags and Softie shirts) look pretty darn good. I just tried their site, www.snugpak.com, but it is down right now. We were considering carrying some of their gear - I hope that webpage failure is not a bad omen :)

If anyone has experience with snugpak products please start up another topic and post about it - I'm real interested in what people have to say ref their quality.

Have fun!

Dan

Thanx Javahed. You've been quite helpful, I plan on ordering a Hydrastorm Force5 on Monday. Thanx again for helping out:cool:

How about the backpack Lara used in Tomb Raider? I am to lazy to go look it up but I understand it is pretty tough (and expensive).
