Recommend a 2.5" folder...

Folks,

I may need to restrict my EDC knife to a blade with a maximum length of 2.5 inches.

I'm looking for suggestions.

The knife should be a locking design; one-handed opening preferred, but will consider others. Usefulness and overall utility is key.

I prefer simple, functional and high-quality designs. i.e., I can do without fancy inlays, graphics or Damascus blades. (although a simple wood/mircata inlay is doable.) To be carried in a conservative office environment. (Think suit and tie.)

Budget is relatively flexible. Looking for good value, but that does not necessarily mean lowest cost.

For reference, I have a Kershaw Chive, which is just too small; I have other c. 3" blades (e.g., CRK Sebenza). I would consider a Mnandi, but I really want to check out options that strictly meet the 2.5" requirement.

Thanks!

Check out some of the Lone Wolf "Paul" desings. They have small pocket folders with a cool axial locking mechanism in utility and dress up designs. I have a Paul Presto, and an executive. There is also a cool Ritter version of the Presto.

The U2 is indeed excellent.

A tempting alternative:
Not cheap, but I do think that the Spyderco Kiwi fits all your requirements. Non knife-knut people often think it looks great which helps acceptance. And it's well made and practical.

Depending on the handle material version you can find it new on ebay around $100.

check out the boker subcom. I have one and really like it. Makes a great money clip. I think the spyderco native makes the cut and is an awesome little knife.

I've been into knives for over 35 years and the Buck Mayo/Waimea is the nicest 2 1/2" folder I've ever owned. I actually like the Waimea as well as I do my small wood inlaid Sebenza.

I have a friend that has a 2.5in carry length law in his area...I just shortened the blade on a Kershaw Leek a touch for him...full handle and legal. He likes it alot.

Spyderco Kopa.
2.5" Full flat grind VG10 leaf shape blade. Limited run of 600 pieces. So far made in 14 different inlays including wood, pearl, bone, coral. Price range $100-$200.

I would give another vote to Fallkniven U2, or if you want something a little fancier, the U1

I'm not a big fan of Spyderco designs, but that Kiwi has some appeal, nice little knife.

IMO, get an Umfaan 'cause they are the best 2.5 inch knives ever. Unbelievable fit, finish, strength of lock, sharpness, warranty, and all around utility for such a short blade.

They're not always easy to find, but there's a reason why. Also, unlike most knives, they have and will continue to appreciate over time. Also, I doubt CRK will ever bring them back - machining to the tolerances required is too expensive, which is probably why they ended Umfaan production after only a few years and started making the Mnandi.

I agree with Fallkniven U2. The design is elegant in its simplicity and completely non threatening. The super steel SGPS blade is rated at 62 HRC, which makes it one of the hardest (and sharpest) knife blades around.

Is the CQC14 bigger than a 2.5" blade? If it is nix that one but if it ain't I'd go for that one just due to the handle ergo's. keepem sharp
