recommend a beater rifle?

You know one reason I like a semi auto is cause I can shoot one . Most people can,t reaquire quick enough to make the second shot more than a shot in the dark . I seem to be able to relax, enjoy the recoil and keep em where I want em . I never did that well with a full auto . Then again the only full auto I shot was an FNC2 . Its a great rifle . Its not a great one to learn how to shoot with .

Another vote for the Mosin Nagant M38.

Amazingly quick-handling. Powerful, cheap cartridge.

So many times, it's not the gun you have, it's the gun you have with you that matters.

So cheap it's practically disposable, you're likely to have it with you.

In rain or sand or conditions where you might lose it.

Handle one and see.

I love the milsurps.

For what you describe, my vote goes for the 30-30, in Winchester's model 94. You said it your self. used, pre cosmetically challenged for 150 or so. very light, accurate, handy, and its own coolness factor to boot!

2nd vote would be for handy rifle.

maybe get a spare 20ga barrel fitted to it?

take care,

Tom

You could get an old Mossberg 500 with a slug barrel on it for around $200 in good shape (quoting NWPA prices here). They're fairly light and hard to damage. Or look around for a Ruger M77 with a stainless barrel and synthetic stock. Their synthetic stocks are ugly as the day is long IMO, but the rifle is nice and light and Ruger's stainless is nearly impossible to damage. So is the action for that matter. I'm not familiar with mil-surplus so I can't really comment, but these fellas wouldn't steer you wrong. Now they've got me wanting an SKS.

Just to go off topic . SKS bayonets are great to throw ! Just make sure they are not attached to the rifle at the time ! L:O:L

Seriously I only have the short ones and they throw great . You have to take off the knurled and springloaded handle on them or they will just fly off . Personally I am going to take the spring out and weld the knurled handle on . I would like to get some of their long bayonets . The only elcheapo place that has them won,t ship to Canada . Too many missing packages with My border boys . I guess they like throwing bayonets too much ! L:O:L

A '92 Winchester clone in .45 Colt. Weighs just under six lbs and is quite handy to carry. It's pretty accurate out to 100 yards. After that I wouldn't try any serious shot placement on game. I got it from CDNN for something like $280
It's distributed through Legacy Sports International if your interested in looking it up. Mine has been great.

So many good suggestions it's mind boggling.

The M-44/M-38 so far is the best sounding one for the purposes I had in mind. decent caliber, short, and really ugly....not gonna fall in love with this one...

But...now I'm also thinking about canoeing in the summer and such..

The K-31 just looks neat as heck. I just plain want it, even if I have to find a justification later. I just have a feeling that one would be a heckuva good shooter.

The various 98 Mausers look nice due to the fact that it's a '98 Mauser (controlled feed, tough, and reliable) and shoots the largest bullet.

The SKS....well...that's having a hard time with me...every time I see an SKS, I'm seeing images of a 94 Windchester poppin' up instead. Especially at current prices. It would have alot of advantages though. fairly light, and easy to carry, Semi-auto would provide a little more comfort, especially considering all these rifles are a bit light for potential game here in Alaska. (read moose, and bear)

The 7.63x39 and the ole 30-30 definitely have the widest ammo selection. I'm not looking for Federal Premium or anything, but it'd be nice if I could at least get some soft points for the K-31 or the Mausers.

I'll see what happens. Yesterday I about started shaking and trembling and crying....I left the house to avoid picking up the Cherokee Rose on YBB. I'm trying to hold off on all such purchases until the end of the month though. Make sure our financial income is proportionate to the bills at the end of the month.

I might scrounge through the guns tonight and see if I can find a likely candidate.

If you are thinking of semi-auto as in multiple shots on game it is a rare man who can reaquire a bead on game fast enough to get an accurate second shot . You can tell a semi-auto deer hunter by the sound in the woods . It is bang and then bang ,bang ,bang ,bang bang . Some people call this spray and pray . There is the rare individual who can relax into the recoil and get his other shots reasonably into the same area . Add into this the fact that unless your first shot was reasonably accurate as well, your target will be doing a very good example of a whirling dervish in transporter mode .

You seem to be zeroing in on what you want with some first class advice .

Alaska?!....get the NEF handy rifle in 45-70....you dun have big nastys galloping through the woods there!

NEF Handi-Rifle is a consideration...big plus to it is that it can break down and be more easily stowed in small aircraft, boats and such. good bear protection is a plus, but not a necessity. That's one of the reasons I was considering the SKS. a bit small, but the recoil is quite manageable for my small statured wife with bursitis in her shoulder. ten rounds of 7.62x 39 has gotta hurt something...

Of course on that note, I was considering gettin' really nutty and gettin' an AK-47. Not a huge fan of 'em but...I could fold a stock up to get it the heck outta the way, moderate power, reliable, and perhaps I could get a 10 round mag to make one more packable. plus, when the wife goes out stompin' around without me I don't think anyone would mess with a woman toting an AK-47 with a Pitbull trotting along beside her...:D

If I go that route I'm debating between .308,'06, or the 45-70. Hmm....probably go with the '06 now that I think of it...already got two 45-70's and two .308s...but only one ought six. Besides I can always put the insert in there to shoot .308 if I get the urge.

bah.....who am I kidding? I'm too broke to afford a rifle until summer....

SOMEBODY is coming out the plush safe to live a tough life...!!! I just haven't decided who yet....:D

Yup. I'll admit it. I want another toy.

namely, a K-31....

In my own defense though, I just realized it this morning myself.:o

(for a beater it's come down to my Windchester 94 in .45 Colt or my Savage 110 30-06)

Hornady sells softpoint ammo in 7.5 Swiss, don't they? And the brass is reloadable to boot. (If you don't reload, plan on starting if you buy a K31.)

I suppose one could always pull the bullets from GP-11 and stick some Sierras in there if the situation warranted it. Similar things have been done in the past.

(Not that we rationalize irrational behavior around here or anything, but hey, you asked...)

you can't beat the range, accuracy and terminal ballistics of a large bore single shot rifle, here's a video on mine, i do note that the ammo is very hard to get, so reloading knowledge is a necessity. (wmv file, windows media player or compat. required)

That's a nice little video, all well and good and appreciated, but I'd feel more secure with something that had a bit more horsepower. We can never over do things when it comes to bears ya' know.....

I just love my Ruger MKIIK M77 .223,but I also have a Ruger No.1 in .338 Mag! for an all-around gun I think the .338 is best (165 gr. or 180 gr. bullets for med use) I wanna get it teflon coated like I'm getting my .223 in a couple months.

you'd probably prefer the nine-shooter version then, picked this japanese import up war surplus, so got a good deal on it. it does require the bear to be close to the seashore - within about 30 miles more or less, but if you are going after kodiak's, thats not a problem. milage will vary with your driving style....

Still a bit smallish, but...the multipe shots are very nice. There's a gun show coming up this weekend at the local high school. Maybe I'll see if I can pick myself up one of them...

Of course I'd have to have the barrels cryogenically treated, and black T'ed.....I wonder if a Leupold 3x9 woudl do for scoping it?
