Hi, since i recently joined the danish army i figured it would be fair for me to splurge on a nice folder for my self. But i have absolutely no idea what to get.
One that i really like the look of is the benchmade rift, with the black blade, but that's pretty much all i've got. I have no idea what would be the right knife steel for me, and which style of blade would be preferable. I don't mind maintaing and oiling the knife, since i have to oil my gun and the issued glock knife all the time anyway, i am however not very comfortable with the thaught of sharpening it, since this is something that i've never really done.

Can anyone recommend a knife based on that info? i'd like to stay under 150 for the knife if possible.

Thanks :)

what will the folder be used for?? self defense, or for utility or survival stuff in the wilderness??

the cold steel voyager only costs around $50 and is big and strong, but light. i like the 4 inch blade one best, but it comes in bigger and smaller sizes.

the spyderco endura 4 is also around 50 dollars, and is a great reliable knife.

My reccomendation is Spyderco Endura or delica in VG10, or Kershaw JYD 2 , or Blur in S30 if you're allowed assisted openers. They are all not expensive, but high quality folders as military tends to be hard on knives, or at times they get lost or stolen.

Some would reccomend a multi tool. There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you like. The chance of using a folding, or even fixed blade knife in combat is miniscule.

It has happened. When Spain pulled out of Iraq quickly after the elections brought about a new government and policy some El Salvadoreans were left in a bad position by the departing spanish troops. The position was overrun and one Salvadorean troop took out 4 bad guys with his knife, an italian style switchblade. He survived the encounter.4 bad guys with AK's didn't, IIRC, his squad didn't make it. He stated he knew he was going to die so he wanted to go out fighting.Quite the guy IMO!

Super, super rare in modern warfare. Hypotheticly possible, but not likely. Joe

There is of course the Spyderco Military.
The name says it all.

Also check the Zero Tolerance 200 which you can have in your price range if you look around on ebay. Indestructible!

This really depends on how much money you want to put towards it. Benchmade and Spyderco have several EXCELLENT offerings in the 40-60 dollar price range. In the 100 dollar range, there are even more offerings. I would say the Kulgera, Rift, 710, Para Military, Military, Endura G10 or Police are all excellent slightly more expensive options. You could even go for a Bradley Alias, or all out for a Sebenza.

Good price, strong, sharp knife that locks solidly into place. Reversible pocket clip. Takes and holds an edge, not hard to re-sharpen. Makes quick work of MRE's ! (if that's what you Danes eat) What's not love?

Benchmade Griptilian

+1 on the Benchmade Griptilian.

And toss a few bucks towards a decent sharpener and practice! :D

all of the knives mentioned are great, but on the sharpening thing, every knife will eventually need to be sharpened so i would recomend getting a spyderco sharpmaker. It is an absolutely foolproof sharpening system and if you follow the detailed instructions your knife will come out razor sharp.

If you are uncomfortable sharpening a knife, I would get something in the Spyderco Byrd or Benchmade Red line. You can buy two or three of these for the same price as a Grip. Get comfortable sharpening with an inexpensive knife made, with decent steel, before you drop a good sum on more expensive knives with harder steels.

Also thumbs up on the sharpmaker as your first sharpening device

Fällkniven U2, and a Fällkniven F1 fixed on your belt. Or any of the EKA models. Quite cheap, sturdy and can be replaced easily. They are in the Swedish military system so they might be in the Danish also.
http://www.eka-knivar.se/ Eka Swede 88 or 92.

Lycka till.

Many of the Spydercos or Benchmades are great choices. I like the ergonomics of the Spydercos.

As for sharpening, I'm guessing the Danish Army has a few knife nuts that could help you and give you some pointers.

With that budget and being in the army, I've read that the most useful knife that you can get is going to be a multitool of some sort. I suggest one of the following:

Victorinox Swisstool
Leatherman Charge or Wave

If you get one of these, you can still afford a Spyderco Endura Wave in addition to the multitool. Get the fully serrated version if you're not going to sharpen it.

i have to agree with the above post. either a leatherman wave or sog powerplier! get alot more use out of that a folding knife
