If you can find a KEEN, go for it. The blade grind is one of the best I've found, and the overall knife oozes with subtle design beauty. PERFECT EDC!

If you want the the absolute best Value for under $200 bucks then look into the LACONICO KEEN at Massdrop. The fit and finish is top notch and it fits anyone's hand big or Nick Shabazz sized. The bronze stone wash finish is to die for

Should Mass drop have a membership?

You have many options, my list would be:

  1. ZT 0450 - Super budget friendly and an amazing action.
  2. MBK EZC
  3. Massdrop Keen
Everyone’s EDC characteristics differ, how about weight? For instance, ZT 0562 is a beast at > 5.5oz in G10 whereas an 0450 in full titanium is 2.8. Sure, there is a difference in blade length, but you get the idea.

Just for fun, if you prefer a longer blade, the 0452 could be a great option. I find my 0452 more pocketable than my 0562.

A thing that has been touched on lightly here (thank you, Mo2 Mo2 ) is that S35VN or other steels will vary from maker to maker, or even model to model, by way of heat treatment, geometry, and surface finish. Each of these things can swing performance more than people often realize.

For example, in Pete’s (Cedric & Ada channel) tests cutting rope, 2/2 ZTs in S35VN have performed considerably less impressively than a Kizer Gemini or Massdrop Keen, with the Keen performing notably better than even the Gemini (which was good). I’ve heard second hand accounts of 3 hardness tests of Kizer S35VN yielding results in the 58-59hrc range, and anecdotally, Elliott Williamson of Ferrum Forge has commented on WE’s HT of S35VN being geared toward edge retention more than corrosion resistance. WE builds the Keen for Massdrop, as well as the Ferrum Forge collaborations with Massdrop. Supersteel Steve has also seen a broad range of results from S35VN, with CRK and WE doing notably well.

Some may object to their methodology, so take that as you will.

These are gonna get tested again but so far the one tested was s35vn but only 52hrc.so pretty low on the rockwell scale.

So while your getting what appears to be s35vn... It won't perform as well. This is why steel names aren't the best to go off of when making a decision.
Also I had this knife and thought it was pretty bad along with a few other reviewers. But hey if you want s35vn that bad at a low cost... It will cut. But that $40 which iirc is more with shipping. Could go to fund a better knife like a civivi or a Manly, or any number of excellent knives with good heat treatments. Just sayin.

What was the date of the report ?. There was another version of this knife that went on sale a year ago +/_

This one is the 2nd version iirc. And they are getting two more in to test and verify. When questioned about the low hrc the company did not reply. You shouldn't expect much for around 40$ let's be honest here. You can s35vn and m390 all the knives... Without the proper heat treatment, they are just trying to sell you the name. This is why people should avoid crkt and various other knives that do this.

The first version didn't do as well either when Peter tested it on rope. So...

Im guessing the next two to be tested will also be low.

Ive been eyeing the para hard, but rhose brown scales
I would also recommend the para 3. You can always buy copper, brazz, or titanium flytanium scales. They are pretty affordable and you wont be much over budget.

Cold Steel ultimate hunter in S35VN steel. I've owned the cts-xhp version but gifted it to a random army soldier. When it was in my possession though it was fairly light, has a good belly on it and the handles are as comfortable as you could want (in my opinion). You can get the new S35VN version for about $125.00 on average depending on which vendor you are using

Pm2 or CS ultimate Hunter in S35VN.
If you can save a few extra dollars I would highly recommend purchasing a Sebenza 21 or Inkosi used on the exchange.

I like S35vn, it's a good steel. I have the SG Spider Monkey CF and love it. Kizer's has been good to me. I also have a TSF Beast but that's out of the price range and is at 3" but a really great knife.

As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life.

Current arsenal other than the aforementioned, is as follows:

ZT 0095BLK S90V
Spyderco Domino CTS-XHP
Spyderco Manix 2 also CTS-XHP
Bailey model 2 geek edition CPM-154
Spyderco Gayle Bradley CPM-M4
Spyderco Yojimbo 2- the dreaded S30V
Brous Bionic D2
Spyderco Aqua Salt in H1
Becker BK5 1095. Won here on BF, sharpened by Jerry Fisk

Get the ColdSteel in s35v that appeals to you. They feel very good in hand and are usually very well made. The heat treatment seems to provide good edge retention.
